Editorial Reviews

Anxiety is the full-length follow up to Autre Ne Veut's 2010 s/t debut. The influences range from David Byrne to Lee Scratch Perry, Laurie Anderson & Annie Lennox to Katy Perry & Rihanna. ANV's primary influence is karaoke- the solitary person singing along with their favorite song. In karaoke we get to be someone bigger than who we usually are. There are club bangers on Anxiety, for sure; "Counting" a cybernetic sea shanty tips its hat to Timbaland, and opening track "Play By Play" rolls out like a slowly evolving Top 40 operetta with nods to Dr. Luke and Patti LaBelle in equal measure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leading the Pack (4.5 out of 5 stars) March 15, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I'm a big fan of well-made R&B. It's a genre about passion, sincerity, and most importantly, vulnerability. So much of what is classified as R&B that appears on the radio comes off as very insincere and invulnerable, with the monotonous cliches and auto-tuned vocals. This was pretty frustrating to me because I missed the cathartic core of the genre, needing to seek out older artists that are accomplished but not entirely relatable because they came from a different time.

Jump ahead to a few years ago. A new wave of experimental R&B singers have started to appear, turning the genre on its head with each new release getting more interesting. We have Janelle Monae for a more classical approach, The Weeknd for a dastardly dude, Twin Shadow for the cool indie crowd, and of course Frank Ocean who has been getting the biggest praise. I've liked all these groups, but there was a level of vulnerability I needed that most of these artists still hadn't reached.

This is where Arthur Ashin (Autre Ne Veut) comes in. His debut album a few years ago showed signs of greatness but was somewhat hampered with the lo-fi production and over reliance on repetition. It was a product of the chillwave movement, albeit with more of a late 80's/early 90's pop aesthetic. Since that debut, Arthur has acquired his Masters in Psychology, underwent psychoanalysis, and stepped up his game in the production department. What came forth from these developments is a near R&B masterpiece.

Every track has something interesting to be wowed by musically, but the true star is Arthur Ashin's vocal delivery. He's not the best singer, but to nitpick that would be missing the point. He lays himself bare across each song in a way you would typically associate with a genre like punk or hard rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously good updated R&B March 8, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
I liked this from listen one and was amazed to discover that Arthur Ashin sings his own songs. The voice is amazing. The treatments and beats are tremendous. Not quite like anything else, but not totally strange either. Earnest, forward sounding music with a deep seated R&B vibe.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Evidence of an R&B Rennaisance September 19, 2013
Format:Vinyl
Last summer, with 'Total Loss', Tom Krell (How to Dress Well) shined a bright light on the 80s/90s R&B renaissance that had remained in the outer boroughs of music culture up to that point. With his sophomore release, Brooklyn's Arthur Ashin takes the baton and propels the sound even further. Filled with cascading walls of sound and over-the-top emotion (in a good way), songs like "Play by Play" and "Counting" strike an incredible balance between classic R&B sounds (a la Prince) and more modern vibes like Timbaland and Kanye. Late night music to bask in with friends, this is one of the year's most compelling albums -- definitely worth your time, just make sure to play on good speakers :).

5.0 out of 5 stars a great, original album August 9, 2013

You will be hard pressed to find another album with this sort of sound. Autre Ne Veut has created a truly unique style, with influences from all sorts of other music like r&b, rock, pop, indie, etc. He blends all of these sounds in a phenomenal manner to birth his own, original sound that is the album Anxiety. You will truly enjoy this unique experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't sing, so he fakes it out
Dude can't sing so he figured out a way to fake you out with tricked out mish mash sounds that are ripped off from 80's and 90's pop-R&B and acid jazz with electro. Crap.

Autre Ne Veut really shines on this thing. I can see how some might be turned off by his distinct vocal stylings though. Great vinyl purchase.
