Book Description

January 1, 2010
Given the terrors of the time we live in, it should not surprise us that according to the World Health Organization anxiety disorders and depression are the fastest growing mental health problems in the world. In spite of this unfortunate trend there have been few resources available to the support persons of those afflicted with anxiety disorders. Everyone dealing with these difficult disorders should welcome the expanded third edition of this book, which is specifically designed to help the caregivers of anxiety neurotics. The book begins with clear and detailed explanations of the causes, symptoms and treatments currently available for generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks, agoraphobia, depression etc. It then offers hundreds of suggestions, many based on personal experiences, to help those caring for anxious people. The book focuses on ideas to help support persons to maintain a well-balanced perspective in order to avoid being overwhelmed by their difficult situations. The end of the book provides excellent descriptions of organizations and Internet sites for those seeking information on help for those with anxiety disorders.

Review

"...one of the better entries in the genre." -- Library Journal, October 1, 2003

From the Publisher

Ken Strong is a graduate of the University of British Columbia. During his 35 year teaching career he has published widely in the fields of Science Education, Forensics and Herpetology. This book is based upon his personal experiences as both a past sufferer of panic attacks and a long time role as a support person to those with panic attacks. As the maintainer of the Caregivers' Section of the multi-awards winning tAPir Anxiety Page on the Internet, Ken has been in close contact with hundreds of people who had the disease and an equally large number of families who were both looking for and willing to share information. This book reflects their needs and advice. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for caregivers/support network members, November 23, 1999
For the past 2 years I have used copies of this book in my practice of anxiety counselling. My aim is to involve the whole family and, whether or not, they come as a group or work together at home, this book has proved to be a significant catalyst in bringing the clients and their families/support network together.

As the title states it is not a book for the knowledgeable long term patient who is looking for new treatment information It is aimed at those who know little about anxiety disorders. About 30% of the book is dedicated to a general description and causes of the disorders with 10% giving a brief overview of types of treatments in use. The remainder of the book deals with how caregivers and clients can work together. The use of real life stories of both caregivers and those with anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia, provides a basis for mutual understanding and discussion. The large number of concrete ready to use suggestions gives the family the necessary feeling they have something tangible with which to work immediately.

The author states the size, content and format of this 70 page book is the result of feedback from many sources on what particular combination proved to be most useful. The group has made an excellent call. A 200 or 300 page book can be intimidating or a `turn off' but these 70 pages of clear, concise practical information has, in my experience, been well accepted and gets the job done even amongst many of those who initially were not particularly interested.

This size is also important when the book is presented to busy employers or teachers to acquaint them with the disorders and ways of working together.

In future editions I would like to see a larger specific chapter on General Anxiety Disorder but the caregiver information for GAD is covered well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally some help for those who don't understand, November 23, 1999
I purchased this book for my husband because I was unable to tell him what I really needed when I was in a panic attack and/or experiencing very high anxiety. This book has been a blessing for me and my family. Now, not only my husband, but other members of my family and my friends now have a better understanding of what I am experiencing and what they can do to help me when I need them. If you are having the same experience, this book is a must have for you. Thank you so much Mr. Strong for writing such a useful, informational book.

5.0 out of 5 stars this book may have saved my life, March 30, 2005
This review is from: Anxiety Disorders: The Caregivers, Third Edition (Paperback)
Ken Strong warns his readers not to be too quick to say, "Hey, that's me!" when just one or two of the symptoms he describes in his book seem to fit the reader. So, I started reading with the true intent of NOT reading too much into it. So, it was even more amazing to me when I found that just about every single symptom listed in this book describes me! I finally could identify my 'problem'. Being an anxious person my initial reaction was...ohmygod, I'm an anxious person, now what?! But, then I had an amazing sense of relief! I now know what needs attention in my life and WHY it is so important to do something/a lot of things to help myself right now. This book gave me so much peace of mind. Thank you Ken Strong for writing a reader-friendly book that may have just saved my life.
