Written with clarity and humour, this book gives a broad view of the nature of anxiety, the anxiety disorders, and their treatment. It distinguishes between anxiety and fear and explains in readable fashion the theories of philosophers, biologists, and psychologists about both.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Handly, Robert with Pauline Neff. Anxiety and Panic Attacks: their cause and cure; the five-point life-plus program for conquering fear. Rawson Assocs: Scribner. 1985. 241p. bibliog. index. LC 84-61931. ISBN 0-89256-276-5. $16.95. psych Goodwin (Psychiatry, University of Kansas) also wrote Phobia: the facts (1983). He holds strong convictions and clearly expresses them in an entertainingly sardonic style, and shows a marked bias toward present-centered therapy. His explanations of recent diagnostic criteria may provide what the diffident reader needs: categorical advice on assessing symptoms. His book offers a prescriptive evaluation of recent research on anxiety disorders, including the major phobias, with excellent bibliographic notes. For general collections. Handly (together with writer Neff) has written a self-help book that emphasizes non-hypnotic progressive relaxation and other mood-induction procedures. It is particularly good in its discussion of the alpha state as an aid for anxiety control and stress resistance. Handly (who heads a human relations consulting firm) utilizes his own experiences as a former agoraphobic to personalize the step-by-step exposure procedure. Colloquial advice on how to ``overcome panic'' is well organized, based on actual experience, and should provide further incentive for task-motivated readers seeking a structured program. William Abrams, Portland State Univ. Lib., Ore.
