Thank-you for this... my husband and I have gone thru it. The tears are running down my face, as I think what has been going on in my wonderful husband's mind. I thank GOD daily for your book, as it has given us the strength to keep working at our marriage. Now that my depression has lifted, I think that if I had not become ill with depression, and Panic disorder, I wouldn't have met all my good friends-Ken you are one, and become a fuller, more compassionate person. It has also done this for my husband who before living with me, wouldn't have understood or cared about people with our disorder. Thank-you, Ken. -- Shelley; Calgary, Alberta, Canada

This easy-to-read book is a must for every support person, as well as every person riddled with anxiety and panic. Ken has written a comprehensive, concise book that clearly states the support person's role in helping the anxious person recover. Being a former sufferer, Ken is qualified to describe how the panic-struck person feels, and what the support person can or can not do for them. This book was designed to give friends, family, and support givers a clear understanding of anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia, and I must say he has done a great job in doing just that. Chapter by chapter, Ken takes apart this illness and describes and explains the various dimensions of anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia. He starts out explaining stress and moves to explaining the different forms of anxiety, depression, anxiety and panic attacks and their causes, medications, and methods of treatment. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific malady of the illness, as well as explaining what it feels like to be a support person. He also writes in detail, how a support person can help the person who is still sick. Chapter Fourteen answers the most frequently asked questions. This section is great because even though it is entitled, "Frequently Asked Questions" they are questions that the support person or the nervously ill person are very often afraid to ask. Once these questions are answered, the support person and sufferer, can experience peace and calmness of mind. The size of the book allows you to carry it with you easily. It gives one confidence to the help available as needed. -- Barbara Casagrande, Anxiety & Panic Consultant with Serenity Counselling Services. Virginia, USA

Thursday your book arrived. Friday morning I gave it to my boss figuring things could not get any worse. Friday afternoon he called me in and actually apologised for believing I was making "the bizarre " symptoms up. We agreed we would both think about it over the weekend and try to find ways to help me at work. THANK YOU! -- Anonymous

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for caregivers/support network members, November 23, 1999
This review is from: Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Agoraphobia (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
For the past 2 years I have used copies of this book in my practice of anxiety counselling. My aim is to involve the whole family and, whether or not, they come as a group or work together at home, this book has proved to be a significant catalyst in bringing the clients and their families/support network together.

As the title states it is not a book for the knowledgeable long term patient who is looking for new treatment information It is aimed at those who know little about anxiety disorders. About 30% of the book is dedicated to a general description and causes of the disorders with 10% giving a brief overview of types of treatments in use. The remainder of the book deals with how caregivers and clients can work together. The use of real life stories of both caregivers and those with anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia, provides a basis for mutual understanding and discussion. The large number of concrete ready to use suggestions gives the family the necessary feeling they have something tangible with which to work immediately.

The author states the size, content and format of this 70 page book is the result of feedback from many sources on what particular combination proved to be most useful. The group has made an excellent call. A 200 or 300 page book can be intimidating or a `turn off' but these 70 pages of clear, concise practical information has, in my experience, been well accepted and gets the job done even amongst many of those who initially were not particularly interested.

This size is also important when the book is presented to busy employers or teachers to acquaint them with the disorders and ways of working together.

In future editions I would like to see a larger specific chapter on General Anxiety Disorder but the caregiver information for GAD is covered well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally some help for those who don't understand, November 23, 1999
This review is from: Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Agoraphobia (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my husband because I was unable to tell him what I really needed when I was in a panic attack and/or experiencing very high anxiety. This book has been a blessing for me and my family. Now, not only my husband, but other members of my family and my friends now have a better understanding of what I am experiencing and what they can do to help me when I need them. If you are having the same experience, this book is a must have for you. Thank you so much Mr. Strong for writing such a useful, informational book.

5.0 out of 5 stars this book may have saved my life, March 30, 2005
Ken Strong warns his readers not to be too quick to say, "Hey, that's me!" when just one or two of the symptoms he describes in his book seem to fit the reader. So, I started reading with the true intent of NOT reading too much into it. So, it was even more amazing to me when I found that just about every single symptom listed in this book describes me! I finally could identify my 'problem'. Being an anxious person my initial reaction was...ohmygod, I'm an anxious person, now what?! But, then I had an amazing sense of relief! I now know what needs attention in my life and WHY it is so important to do something/a lot of things to help myself right now. This book gave me so much peace of mind. Thank you Ken Strong for writing a reader-friendly book that may have just saved my life.
