The first cassette of 'Taking Back the Power' educates people into the nature of anxiety, panic attacks and Anxiety-related Disorders. It gives an understanding of why anxiety and panic attacks occur and why they continue to happen. This second side of the cassette describes the role thoughts play in maintaining the Disorders and teaches a management technique to control and eliminate not only the negative cycle of thinking but the Disorder itself.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Anxiety Disorders have only been recognised since 1980 and during the 1980s and early 1990s there were minimal resources available for people with Anxiety Disorders. The tapes were originally produced in the late 1980s to help meet this need for resources. Even we were surprised at the enormous response to the tapes, a response which has not diminished but continually grows.

A major factor of the success of the tapes is they are based upon the perspective of someone who has experienced an Anxiety Disorder and who understands the subject matter at a very deep intimate level. A level which resonates with thousands of other people who are experiencing an Anxiety Disorder. Another factor in the success of the tapes is that they are updated on a regular basis from our own research, other relevant studies, and the experience of thousands of our clients.

The major aim of the tapes is to enable people to discover their own personal power and to use it to take back the power from the Disorder. Unwittingly, we give our personal power away to:

* the Disorder
* the lack of understanding of some health professionals,
*the lack of understanding by partners, family members, friends,
*society's perception of anxiety and stress
*the stigma associated to Mental Health issues.

The various treatments people have received over the years also contributes to the loss of personal power.

We need to take back our Power and work with it for full recovery. To enable us to take back the power means we need to fully understand the 'mechanics' of the Disorder and how it effects us as an individual. It means becoming 'proactive' and not 'reactive' to the symptoms and the many fears we all feel. Proactive in we confront and work through our fears instead of being disabled by them. Proactive in the treatment we receive. Proactive in learning to care about ourselves and not in what other people think.

The tapes do this by education into the Disorders, their symptoms and associated fears, by meditation whereby we work toward reducing our anxiety levels and by working with our anxiety producing thoughts. Taking back the Power ultimately means recovery and I have yet to meet a person who doesn't want to recover.

About the Author

Bronwyn Fox has been working in the area of Anxiety Disorders since 1984 since recovering from Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia. As Anxiety Disorders had only been recognised by the Medical Profession since 1980, there were no resources available in the community, therefore increasing the isolation and suffering of those that experienced them. Having personally experienced the intense suffering of an Anxiety Disorder, Bronwyn became determined to provide much needed services for others in the community experiencing Anxiety Disorders.

Bronwyn was a co-founder of the Panic Anxiety Disorder Association (PADA) in 1987. A consumer group that provides education, information, referral and teaches management techniques to people who experience an Anxiety Disorder. She lobbied South Australian Health Services for much needed recognition and funding. Since that time, PADA has become the largest National organisation for people with Anxiety Disorders. From small beginnings in South Australia, Bronwyn has helped form similar Associations in every state in Australia. Bronwyn was also a co-founder of the Anxiety Disorders Foundation and was Deputy Chairperson of the Foundation. Bronwyn advocates for appropriate treatment services for people with Anxiety Disorders both at a State and Federal level. She has worked with Health Professionals in all areas - General Practitioners, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Nursing staff, Community Health workers; to increase their awareness and education on Anxiety Disorders.

Bronwyn conducts her Panic Anxiety Management Program around Australia, in every capital city and especially in the regional country regions, where resources are minimal at best. The demand for this Program is extremely high, often being booked out in advance. PADA has received acknowledgement of her work when it won the Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Achievement 1995 Silver Award for Non Government Services for her Programs and Workshops. Her Program has also been assessed by a leading Anxiety Disorder specialist and researcher, Associate Professor Julian Hafner, as being 85% effective for people who experience an Anxiety Disorder. Over 300 people who experienced an Anxiety Disorder participated in the study. Participants in the study showed a significant decrease in symptoms at a 3 month follow up. Over the years, thousands of people have gone on to recover as a result of Bronwyn's work. The Australian actor Garry McDonald, also experienced an Anxiety Disorder He read her bestseller book 'Anxiety Attack, Don't Panic' and as result recognised his own Panic Disorder. He has since fully recovered. He wrote the Forward for her second bestseller book 'Power over Panic'.

Bronwyn Fox has also continued to conduct research in the area of Anxiety Disorders and has travelled to the USA twice to present her findings at conferences.

Overall, Bronwyn Fox is a leading authority on Anxiety Disorders. She is highly respected by both Health Professionals and people who experience Anxiety Disorders.
