Editorial Reviews

After filming a series of successful surfing documentaries, filmmaker Bruce Brown turned his attention to motorcycle racing and shot On Any Sunday, which attracted a wide audience and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1972 as Best Documentary. In this look back at the phenomenon of On Any Sunday, Brown's son Dana interviews racers who appeared in the original movie as well as people who fondly recall watching the film over and over during its theatrical run. The elder Brown, with his trademark understated sense of humor, talks about the eccentric characters who became involved in the film, including movie star and biker Steve McQueen, who helped provide financial backing. Outtakes from the original documentary are shown, including some unused scenes featuring the legendary "helmet-cam," a clumsy device that provided spectacular footage even if the racer wearing it on his head looked ridiculous. Several of the racers profiled in the original film have remained friends with Brown over the years, and scenes at a reunion show that the camaraderie forged on the cycle tracks 30 years ago still survives. Anyone who remembers the thrill of watching On Any Sunday will find this nostalgic return enormously entertaining. --Robert J. McNamara

4.0 out of 5 stars Beat It !, February 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: On Any Sunday Revisited (DVD)
This horse cannot be beaten to death !

Although not as good as the original, (how could it be ?!), it is a worthy tribute to the riders and stars of On Any Sunday.

Meeting them again after 30 years and seeing how this revolutionary movie of it's time affected their lives is what I wanted to see. (You can see Malcolm Smith in OAS.3).

History in the making before your very own eyes - How can you beat it !

5.0 out of 5 stars Teriffic for old timers, March 11, 2001

If you loved motorcycles in the 50's & 60's, you will enjoy this film. It contains footage not used in On Any Sunday, with interviews with some of the riders featured in On Any Sunday.

Watch the old bikes ride again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Only if you were there, can you "re"visit, May 7, 2001

This review is from: On Any Sunday Revisited (DVD)
Henderson in Nevada, you missed the point. "RE" is the key word here. What I hoped and expected; the young crazy kids, grown up and now grandfathers as they hash over old times. They're in their 50's and 60's even. They all looked terrific; still good pals, which just goes to prove the sport is for real. Malcom Smith and Jim Rice weren't featured and I was looking forward to seeing them. If you weren't around back in '71 to appreciate the original release, or you didn't ride; you probably won't appreciate this. WE were involved and my husband died since then; so it was like going home. Odom, Bugsy, Dave Aldana, Kenny Roberts, Mert Lawwill, Palmgren, Nixon, Gene Romero; if these names don't sound familiar, don't bother. It's exactly what the title says; "REVISITED"; IF YOU WEREN'T THERE THE FIRST TIME, YOU CAN'T "RE" VISIT anyplace. I did hope to see some Widow Maker in Utah, how many people have made the top since. Teeth clenching "endo's" that would kill most. I'm happy with it; just too short. Death of one rider; sad, but can we say "UNEXPECTED?" I think not, since when you see some of the accidents left out of the original; you should know why.
