4.0 out of 5 stars Leon Is Back! June 24, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Leon Redbone is one of my favorites and has provided a soundtrack to some of the most important events in my life. His first three (maybe four) albums are his best, and he will never be able to recapture the magic of these early recordings. But with ANYTIME -- he comes very close. This is his best album in ages. His reading of the Swift Jewel Cowboys' "Little Willie Green" is great -- his final warblings made me laugh out loud. And he does to "Moonlight Bay" what he once did to "Shine On Harvest Moon" -- he takes an impossible corny and tapped-out relic and transforms it into a strange, haunting dream. There are lots of other gems here, and everything comes together. Sigh. How lovely that he made this album -- thank you Leon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Leon Returns August 21, 2002
Format:Audio CD
This album is definitely for those who appreciate the classic sounds of Leon Redbone. If you were disappointed in previous recent albums that seemed to depart from the Redbone style of his early years, you will be in for a treat with this album. It sounds more like early Leon Redbone than the early albums did! A definite "thumbs up" for this one is in order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ear Candy! June 18, 2003
Format:Audio CD
O Gawd! My happy aentenna vibrated like a tuning fork when the first notes of "Anytime" burst from my speakers! Delicious, delightful, decadently different! I have other offerings from The Bone, but this cd is all sweets, all the way through. Redbone sets moods, paints vingettes with his music here. The title track "Anytime" is nostalgic and sexy somehow. "Your Feets Too Big" is sheer fun, sing it with your kids. Slow dance with your sweety in a candlelit room to "Moonlight Bay". This is a collection of charming, offbeat, amusing and gentle music for young and old. Fingers and toes will tap, shoulders will swivel, heads will nod, and you will find yourself singing along with the simple tunes involuntarily. Why fight it? Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A return to Form October 9, 2001
By JetPak
Format:Audio CD
Finally Leon Redbone has released a great CD of music from beginning to end. This is a return to form that was last heard back in 1992 with "Up a lazy river".
My hats off to Mr. Redbone for coming up with another set of great listening that will last for years to come! I love this recording. I'm adding a bit more here because I'm wondering if Mr. Redbone is ever going to release more studio recordings? I've really played all his records so much and I've had to replace some of them. I'm sure the rest of his fans are wondering the same thing. Leon, please give us a new CD. Anyone know what he's doing?

4.0 out of 5 stars Longing in love and in control April 9, 2013
By Phred
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
What first drew me to the song stylings of a much younger Leon Redbone was musical comedy. His performance style, his vocal technique, his minimalist arrangements and his selection of unlikely Dixieland jazz greats combined to make his songs something to enjoy while wearing a big smile. In this CD we have a very different Leon Redbone.

What convinced me to buy this CD was his performance of Moonlight Bay. I cannot imagine a more perfectly longing presentation of the song. All of a sudden I realized the real secret to Leon Redbone is that he always matches his voice and his arrangement to a very precise effect. Through this song I have gained a new appreciation for a fine performer.

Unfortunately this rendition of Ain't Gonna Give You None of My Jellyroll is terrible. Tempo, lyric changes - everything tended to neuter a classic song. The standard by which I judge this particular number is available on YouTube and presented by the great Sweet Emma Barrette.

And so on one CD we have Leon Redbone at his very best, Leon Redbone disappointing and a number of tunes in between. Any Time reestablishes Leon Redbone as a very intelligent performer of clubroom Dixieland Jazz, soulful blues and handy with Tin-Pan Alley. This is great music to relax to performed by a technician worthy of serious listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Listening--Foot tapping Music November 16, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
We've been Leon Redbone fans ever since hearing him (many years ago) when he was the opening act to a Tom Waits' concert---now there's a dichotomy. In fact, that's a good comparison; if you're familiar with Tom Waits' style, just think opposite. For you novices, Leon Rebone (with his rich baritone voice) sings the old standards with guitar, banjo, tuba, and sometimes he even whistles. A sampling from "Any Time" include: "Any Time", "Moonlight Bay", "All I Do Is Dream of You", "Ain't Gonna Give You None of My Jelly Roll", etc. If you're a L.R. fan, "Any Time" is typical Redbone--nuff said. For the rest of you, this is "easy listening"---sometimes even "foot tapping" music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful! October 31, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This CD is absolutely wonderful! Leon is still the king of inciteful, soul-filled renditions of old songs and one of the best creators of new songs. I highly recommend this CD to anyone, ANYTIME!
