5.0 out of 5 stars Great Live Sound
This is definitely a great CD, one worth the 5 stars. It doubles in effect as a greatest hits CD, because the set list is certainly O.A.R.'s best songs (Untitled and Missing Pieces are the only ones missing). I have seen them 3 times, and the CD really captures the energy they bring live, something that just cant be captured in the studio. You can tell Marc is in a...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Not Brilliant
This is the first album I have of theirs. Burned a live show and friends' recommendations drew my interest to OAR. I love their passion and style. They are good musicians, and I bet their live shows are a blast. They have some catchy tunes that everyone in the party can sing after a few drinks. However, their lyrics can be a bit sophomoric and full of lyrical...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Live Sound, May 24, 2002

This is definitely a great CD, one worth the 5 stars. It doubles in effect as a greatest hits CD, because the set list is certainly O.A.R.'s best songs (Untitled and Missing Pieces are the only ones missing). I have seen them 3 times, and the CD really captures the energy they bring live, something that just cant be captured in the studio. You can tell Marc is in a really good mood and it shows in the songs. The highlights are City on Down, Black Rock, Hey Girl, Hold on True, Night Shift...Stir it Up, and Poker. I would recommend this to anyone, especially someone just getting on the band... this CD would be the best place to start your collection. O.A.R. is an incredible band, and hearing a live CD is the next best thing to seeing them in person, something I also totally recommend. Get on the band now... they're gonna be huge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost like being there, July 26, 2002

O.A.R. (Of a Revolution) is a name to get used to, for the future is bright for these early 20-somethings. O.A.R. is a group that just seems to get better every time I hear them. This double-cd features a live concert in Maryland and is recorded by the same engineer employed by Dave Matthews Band for live recordings. The similarities between these two don't end there, however. Anybody who enjoys the upbeat songs from DMB can surely hop on the bandwagon (pardon the pun) with ease. The band arrangements even coincide, with both employing a saxophone for that unique flavor. A highly regarded group.

Recommended for fans of: Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Widespread Panic, Phish, Sublime, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Guster, Ben Harper, Bob Marley.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Listen, October 11, 2004
This review is from: Any Time Now (Audio CD)
Every CD that I have listened to has a certain passion, or a theme that comes from the writer's heart. Any Time Now by: O.A.R. follows the example of all the other CD's and expresses a sense of personal relationship through their beats, lyrics, and emotions. I would rate this CD high in my standards, considering I can listen to the whole soundtrack over and over without being bored or becoming tired of the songs. O.A.R. (Of A Revolution) uses their unique talents of creating a sound that never becomes old. They use the upbeat sound incorporated with a sense of mellowness to attract their fans to a mix of different genres. Through this CD, O.A.R. has about 30 plus songs that inherit their classic methods of writing music. A couple of the songs that I found were very popular and well known were, "Crazy Game Of Poker", "Black Rock", and sometimes even "Hey Girl". The one that has received the most response is "Crazy Game Of Poker" because of the recent interest in cards and how everyone seems to be listening to this particular song while they play poker. The listener will find a wide variety of plots and themes through this bands music. In addition to the wide variety, most songs on this album are very long in time length. Most of their songs range from 9 to 12 minutes in length, which is very long for musicians. With their classic method, O.A.R. has succeeded with this album and have created a quality CD that all ages can listen to. It would not surprise me if O.A.R. continued to excel in the music industry as long as they stay together and stick with what they are good with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Of The Best Live/Jam Music Out There, December 8, 2002
By
Reid Copeland (Conshohocken, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Any Time Now (Audio CD)
Any Time Now was the first album I heard by OAR. I listened to their studio albums and I realized that OAR, like Phish and Dispatch and other jam bands, sound best live on stage. In the studio, OAR sounds rather empty to me. On stage, they are awesome. One of the differences is they have added a very talented saxophonist to the band for Any Time Now who adds a wonderful touch to their songs.

I went to an OAR concert and had the time of my life. They have so much energy and talent and the show was not for one second boring. I have seen John Mayer, Trey Anastasio, Guster, The Other Ones (The Greatful Dead), Dave Matthews Band, and Dispatch in concert and they were all as phenomonal as OAR was.

If you like any of the bands I have listed, you will love OAR. If you love any of the bands I listed than you should stop whatever you're doing and go by Any Time Now this minute. One thing OAR needs to do now is write new music, go on tour, then release another live album like anytime now.

Like the other bands I listed, OAR is wonderful, feel-good music. Many of their songs are the tellings of stories and the adventures they have had. Other topics of their music are partying, girls, drinking, and working. It seems like the last thing we need to listen to right now is Eminem singing about slitting his ex-wife's throat.

Hot tracks include: Conquering Fools, Hey Girl, Night Shift, About An Hour Ago, and Black Rock.

See OAR in concert....

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Live Material, November 19, 2005

This show totally captures what an OAR live show is all about. From start to finish, they play a killer show to their hometown crowd of DC (they hail from Rockland, MD). All their best hits are here, along with some older material. I'd fully recommend this to all OAR fans and for new listeners trying to get a feel for the group and their music...Check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta Get This CD, January 11, 2005
This review is from: Any Time Now (Audio CD)
This is definitely O.A.R.'s best CD. They're a few people that criticize this saying its not as good as DMB. What they don't understand is that O.A.R. is not a jam band like DMB. They do jams, but are very versitile. Anyway, this is an awesome band live, and getting a live CD like this is the best way to get introduced to them. If you already like them, you shouldn't even be reading this, you should already own it. The sax solos on City on Down and others is amazing, and the the lead singer Marc has such an amazing voice. You need this CD, and then you have to see them live, as their shows are awesome. Then and Now is a great CD to go along with this, but their earlier stuff is awesome too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glory! My Prayers Have Been Answered!, February 25, 2005
This review is from: Any Time Now (Audio CD)
To those of you spending many nights praying to the good Lord that the laws of anatomy, physics, and logic would momentarily be suspended so that Bob Marley and Dave Matthews may procreate....arise, your prayers have been answered. O.A.R. is a fun, feel good, turn your grey winter to a sunny spring afternoon band. This CD captures their live performance, the band's forte, and is a must own for anyone into reggae, Phish, DMB, or other noncrap music.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest..., March 3, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Any Time Now (Audio CD)
...Of A Revolution is one of the most underrated bands out there. Their music is original with twists that makes any fan of a good rock band happy.

This is O.A.R.'s live cd. They are one of the greatest live bands i've ever heard. i've been to many concerts in the past couple years but nothing can even come close to compare what O.A.R. can produce.

The tracks on this 2-disk set really show how creative O.A.R. is with their great arrangement of words in their lyrics. Some of the great songs are "That was a crazy game of poker" and "hey girl".

This is a must have for any fan of dave matthews, matchbox twenty, five for fighting, hootie and the blowfish, howie day, damien rice, guster....

Dont forget to pick up their other cds includeing, "in between now and then", "the wanderer", "risen", "souls aflame".

5.0 out of 5 stars worth every penny, December 15, 2003
By
adam (towson, md (originally from rockville, md)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Any Time Now (Audio CD)
O.A.R. is a group that is harshly criticized for "selling out" and going mainstream in their album "in between now and then." While I agree that the overall sound is much too smooth and perfected studio-wise, it's hard to hate on a band for capitalizing on their hard-earned success, which developed from their touring. I've followed O.A.R. since their days at Wooten High School in Rockville, Marylalnd, and there is no better way to experience this band then to see them live. I was actually in concert for the first of two days they used at the 9:30 club to record this album, and trust me, they haven't put many fine touches on these songs. Despite the many untrue comparisons to dmb, one way the two bands compare is that they both deliver in concert in a way few can these days. Though their musicianship is not complicated, O.A.R. plays songs which flow straight to your soul, using strong reggae vibes to perfectly express their songs about hope, peace and love. The O.A.R. boys love to play their music, and their showmanship expresses exactly that, with songs like Destination (my personal favorite), city on down, and Anyway (pretty much this song is all about their love of music). Many people first heard of the band through "crazy game of poker" and the song doesn't dissapoint here. They love to switch up the pace of songs and make things interesting, best shown with Night Shift, in which they invite junior marvin from bob marley's band to jam with them. Some people call O.A.R. a Christian rock band based on their uplifting lyrics, which I find amusing considering the majority of the band is jewish. The surprise for me on this live album was the hidden song on the first disk, an acoustic number entitled "short a try." Acoustic and beautiful, it sounds like nothing O.A.R. have ever tried (I wouldn't compare it to I feel home) the results are astounding. Marc Roberge puts his heart and soul into every word, but nothing less could be expected from him. Truly underrated as a lyricist, the music stretches way beyond college frat parties, where O.A.R. became well known at Ohio State. The boys truly known where their home is, though, and that's in maryland, and they express this in I feel home and black rock (where roberge screams "maryland that is!) The band's first two cd's, the wanderer and soul's aflame are classics, and their studio albums have since lost the freewheeling technique they used for the first two by recording in one take, much like a live feel, but there's nothing like seeing O.A.R. live. It is truly an experience, one which is captured on Any Time Now. As long as O.A.R. never lose their live chops, they can make whatever kind of studio album they want, polished or not. Lastly, for anyone confused, let me just point out mistakes made by many, many people: 1)it's O.A.R., not written or pronounced OAR like a boat paddle 2) they are from rockville, md, not Ohio State (that's just where they attended college and developed a bigger reputation) 3)they are not a christian rock band, a couple of the guys are jewish and it doesn't make you christian to have uplifting lyrics) Now stop reading and go get O.A.R.-Any Time Now, I guarantee it will never leave you cd player, it's that good!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Piece of Artistic Expression Ever Created, October 3, 2002
By
c d jeffries jr (Maryland, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Any Time Now (Audio CD)
O.A.R. has not only taken us from the reality of life and put us in a world of their own, but they have touched us as human beings on "Any Time Now". The difference between their studio recordings of some of these tracks and their live recordings is extroadinary. Marc Roberge is so inventive and can add-lib like no other. On "City On Down", Jerry Depizzo gets a 2 1/2 minute solo on sax that just takes you away and you can't help but put a smile on your face. The 9:30 Club version of "Get Away" is milestones ahead of the original. A semi-new song, "Destination", is very good, combining reggae and rock at once. Number 4, "Conquering Fools", just makes you so damn happy inside. "About An Hour Ago", well about an hour ago, I was listening to this song. It is just damn good like the rest. "Black Rock" stands out for me, because when Marc adds the extra verse ("about one, maybe two, three, four, five, years ago...") that is the climax of this piece, I sing at the top of my lungs every time. "Delicate Few" is one of my favorites, how it changes from the slow to the fast pace. Keep the song running, "Short a Try" follows. Good slow tune. To start disc 2, O.A.R. has brought on "The Wanderer", a good story about somebody looking for their soul. #3, "Anyway", is a new joint, taking you into the semi-jazz kind of stuff which sounds very good. "Night Shift" is also one of my favorites. It includes one of my favorite Marley songs, "Stir It Up". "Hold On True" is great, too. Skipping a few tracks, I find myself at "Poker", the greatest song I have ever heard in concert, on my stereo, drivin on the road, anywhere. The many sections of "Poker" describe O.A.R. as a band. You really can't describe this song, it touches everyone in a way. "Poker" is usually the first O.A.R. songs every fan hears, and by God is it a good one. This CD closes with "I Feel Home", a sentimental piece talking about Rockville, Maryland, the hometown of O.A.R. I gave this album five stars because six stars wasn't a selection.
