I purchased this song out of curiosity.
I know Vicci is a powerful singer with a great voice, and that she does a variety of really good music with her very tight band, but this sounds different than the norm.
After listening to it, I couldn't believe my ears, so I listened again. Then I listened again. Again. Again. I think I have a new addiction, and this song is it, right now. I can't recommend it highly enough!
After a dozen or more listenings, I began to wonder who the other musicians were, and where it might be recorded, and whether she wrote the song or not.
I questioned if she wrote the song because the lyrics fit her like a fine lambskin glove, all soft and comfortable, yet tight, and oh, so right.
I learned that the song was originally recorded by an artist named Syl Johnson in about 1978. That's fine, now I know that the song is a classic, but where was it recorded, and who is in the band?
More digging revealed that not only was the song originally recorded by Syl Johnson; this version is also recorded by Syl Johnson, that is to say, he recorded it in his studio for his recently revived record label, Twilight Records, Inc. The accompanying band is his own backup band, The New Old Souls. That name also seems to fit Vicci like a glove, as she delivers this song with the grace of a well seasoned veteran in the style, relaying more emotion than would seem possible, even though this type of music is outside her standard repertoire. How great is that? How great is Vicci?
Seriously, if you want to enjoy a brand new song that feels like a classic you've heard a million times, purchase this one. Then listen and begin to ponder, how many times can you listen to such a great song before you get tired of it? I don't think I ever will, and I sure do look forward to more great music like this from Vicci Martinez.
