Always wonder about cheap radios but so far I've been impressed with the unit. Decent receive, good signal reports, and rejection is good. Much louder than my previous 2m mobiles (Alinco, Kenwood). My Alinco was stolen from truck. Detachable faceplate comes in handy. Struggled with the mounting bracket, too tight for unit to slide into slots, but was able to work on the springs and get it to work. Has nothing to do with the unit operation but something they could work on.
Will see how it does over time but no complaints so far.

Just installed one in my truck, for both ham and search and rescue use. Very happy with it. Getting another to use as the base radio for our search and rescue group. Easy to remote mount the control head. The mounting bracket is a bit flimsy, and only works if you mount it hanging down from the top of the cab. However, in my 2011 Land Cruiser there is no room up there. So I attached sticky Velcro to the bottom of it and then sticky Velcro (opposite polarity) to the speaker grille on top of the dash and it works just fine. As far as antennas, Comet makes an antenna that is specifically detuned to work well on the Special Emergency frequencies (~155 MHz) as well as the ham 2m band. As far as programming, I highly, highly recommend not using the free factory software, but spending money to buy the programming software and cable offered by RTsystems. Tried the factory software just for grins and quickly gave up. With the RTsystems software, I simply copied all the entries from my Wouxun handheld radio template, pasted into the template for the Anytone, and was ready to program.

The Anytone AT-5888UV radio unit is solidly built and I get great reports of how I sound on the air. The volume can be set very loud, in fact since I am using it as my base station (with the excellent Pyramid PS14KX as a power supply), I would like the volume to be settable just a little lower. Of special note is the ability to also transmit on MURS and GMRS bands (for emergency consideration only since this radio is not Part 95 approved), and the cross band repeater could have some use as well (again, used with care to stay legal).

My radio was shipped complete with the programming cable, a nice plus (my radio came from Amazon via Advanced Specialties - and a day sooner than expected). On the down side (and accounting for the loss of one star) the software is a fairly basic effort lacking the ability to sort channels and has limited copy and paste capability. Instead I used CHIRP (good at channel editing but currently poor at setting this radio's functions) in combination with the Anytone software to get all the channels and all the radio settings the way I want them. So if you like a complete turn-key system of radio and software, this radio is not for you. If you don't mind a little fiddling with SW you can save a few bucks vs. the big brand names.

This HAM radio seems to be everything that it says it is. The software to program it is easy to find and install and it even works. You can also program it with CHIRP. Full color display, not simply RGB, but full 32K color. Easy to use right out of the box. It is my main mobile rig in my F150. I have no complaints about this rig.

This radio was easy to program on my computer, the price was less than $300 shipped so you have to shop. I like the five power lever setting, I have hit repeaters full scale with this radio that I have never done with my yaesu, the receive an A+, I would recommend this VHF/UHF radio to any ham.

I've had the radio for about a week now. It has some flaws:
1. Receive audio quality is ok, not that great.
2. The knobs are very light-weight, with very little resistance.
3. The scan speed is ridiculously slow
4. The down button on the microphone doesn't work on mine. Up is ok.

I'd still probably buy one again, as it is a cheap dual-bander. This thing is half the price of what I bought my first dual-bander for many, many moons ago. I'd recommend it as a first rig or as a backup rig. I found the software relatively easy to use. It isn't fancy - just does the job.

UPDATE:
I've now had the radio for three months. I've changed my mind...I would not recommend this radio. The more I use it, the less I like it. The audio quality on receive is very tinny. There is a constant hum in the receive audio as well. It doesn't matter if my truck is running or not, so it isn't the alternator or a ground loop. The transmit audio is way too loud - with no way to adjust it. If you hold the mic far away, all of the cab noise is still picked up. DTMF just doesn't work consistently. If you get on the yahoo forum for this radio, you'll see the same complaints by others.

At $300, you've got a lot of options for a dual-bander. I'd recommend a Kenwood or Yaesu. Sorry everyone, but you should pass on this one.

I was needing a dual band radio that was cross band capable but the price of the other brands was making saving up for them take a long time. I finally decided to try this radio. It seems to be very comparable to other brand radios. The only thing I have noticed is that the mobile speaker seems a little fuzzy for the lack of a better word. I initially thought that the speaker was installed upside down, but it wasn't. It seemed to get better over time.

The radio cross bands quickly with very little tail noise. One thing that I truly like about this radio is the microphone! It is a speaker microphone. The top A/B buttons light so that you can tell which side of the radio is receiving. The lower A/B light give you an indication of which side you are set to transmit on. The big round A/B button makes it very easy to switch from side to side. This radio microphone has won me over!

I like the radio and will be taking it out in the field on it's first special event, a 50K run this weekend and confident that it will perform up to expectations. Would recommend an ok for anyone to purchase.
