Great Celtic Music by a (once) Great Band!, July 14, 2009
This review is from: To Anybody At All (Audio CD)
I remember buying this album from the band at a Celtic festival in Bethlehem (Celtic Fest...if you're not familiar, it is one of the best, and you should check it out!). If this was a record or a tape, I would have completely worn it out by now, because I have listened to it so many times! This band achieves such a natural and relaxed sound, it's hard not to enjoy yourself when listening.
The band is: E.J. Jones on Highland Bagpipes, Scottish Smallpipes, Flute & Low Whistles; Gregory McQueen on Acoustic & Electric Fiddle; Jennifer Hamel on Guitar and Vocals; Emily Dugas on Percussion & vocals; with guest musician Gerry O'Beirne on 12-string guitar on 2 tracks. All of these musicians are high-calibre, and can really play the *#$# out of their instruments. Jen Hamel's voice has an unresistable folk quality to it, that just melts your heart, and when Emily sings with her in harmony, it is simply beautiful (such as on "Peggy" and "Babylon").
[this band, to my dismay, broke up in 2003, but reassembled in 2006! the lineup changed: no more Jen Hamels. They are from TX, and I hope they come around my way again!]
The songs range from traditional jigs, reels, and ballads all arranged by the band that come from Irish, Scottish, British backgrounds. This is a highly enjoyable CD for anyone who loves Celtic, Irish, or Folk music. I forget how much I love this CD everytime I rediscover it on the shelf!
