5.0 out of 5 stars Pure poetry
Like many of the reviews here, I first heard Rose by seeing her perform live in Chicago. I was very moved by her performance and picked up this recording after the show. Rarely does a recording capture a performer's artistry and charisma on disc. This is a wonderful exception to that unfortunate trend. Rose's lyrics are mysterious and often intriguingly ambiguous...

2.0 out of 5 stars Sounds just OK to me
A couple good songs, but the remainder left me feeling like something was missing. She has some talent (that comes through on the two songs I enjoyed), but still seems to be trying to 'come into her own'. Not that great, but not the worst CD I have ever bought either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure poetry, July 30, 2000

Like many of the reviews here, I first heard Rose by seeing her perform live in Chicago. I was very moved by her performance and picked up this recording after the show. Rarely does a recording capture a performer's artistry and charisma on disc. This is a wonderful exception to that unfortunate trend. Rose's lyrics are mysterious and often intriguingly ambiguous. This is not fluffy hold-my-hand-and-walk-in-a-field folk any more than it is Top 40 Jewel-esque pop . This is musical poetry at its most creative, with more of a nod towards the Doors than to Fairport Convention. She delivers her introspection in a breathy sultry voice that carries the fragilty of Nick Drake coupled with the pure emotional force of Eddie Vedder.

All of the tracks are acoustic, a few have Rose's guitar coupled with a mournful fiddle. "Abalin" gives me chills upon every listen.

I highly recommend this CD, particularly to fans of Nick Drake, mid-70s Neil Young, vintage Joni Mitchell, and even the Smashing Pumpkins. In a time when so much great music goes unheard, take a chance with this one. You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A truly original musical presence, September 13, 2000

You've not heard the likes of Rose Polenzani. Truly, I can't compare her to any folksinger I've ever heard before. Her lyrics are striking, her voice is haunting. It's as if she's feeling -- experiencing -- the lyrics rather than merely singing them. Her poem-like songs are far from "by the book." Rose Polenzani is not for everyone, but if you're looking for something that's truly different, you should pick up Anybody.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album and New Sound, May 17, 2001

I first saw Rose open for the Indigo Girls and she was so quiet and shy that we heard very little of her performance (and we were in the third row!) So I was unsure what to think of her, but then I heard "Olga's Birthday" and LOVED IT! Went out and got the album and have really got into it! Some songs took a few times before they stuck with me, but now I love the whole CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars not like any other rose, September 8, 2000
By A Customer

There is a certain kind of magic in Rose's lyrics, a haunting kind of poetry that sticks with you long after listening to it. She tends toward a twisted kind of story telling that is a bit like a stream of concious Grimms fairy tale done as a folk song. Actually, the first few times thru, you will be so caught up in her achingly, soul wrenching voice that you probably won't even pay any attention to the words. Amazing....

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Poetic--BUY IT!, December 30, 1999
By A Customer

I first saw Rose open for the Indigo Girls in Saratoga, NY over the summer and bought this CD after the show. It is a beautiful recording. Quiet and soft, yet strikingly memorable. Rose is a welcome addition to the folk scene in the US. I cannot say "BUY THIS RIGHT NOW!" loudly or forcefully enough.

I really like this album. Rose Polenzani's music and vocals alone are fantastic but on this album she also gets some help from Andrew Bird and the Indigo Girls. Also be sure to check out rosepolenzani.com, which is a great website. All in all this CD is really worth your money. I promise!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rose is amazing, January 12, 2000
By A Customer

Rose and I went to the same high school and so I started going to her shows in the Chicago area years ago. I always thought she was amazing, even better than a lot of her musical influences, and I'm really glad she's getting big now because I can't think of anyone whose talent and personality warrant it more than hers. You'll see what I mean if you listen to this CD.
