4.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, July 16, 2006

This review is from: Anycom USB-250 Bluetooth 2.0 400 Ft Broadcom Chip (Personal Computers)
This product deserves a five, but since I only had it for a short time. I did not want to jump the gun. It connects greatly with my Plantronics 510 headset, my Palm TX and with my Razr phone; which pretty much is all the bluetooth enabled devices I currently own. It has made me wonder what else can I add to my system that supports bluetooth. So far I had no problems with it interfereing with my Wifi network, which is a good thing. I read that bluetooth can cause collisions when data is transmitted over a wifi network, as both wifi and bluetooth use the same frequency range, but while wifi listens before tansmitting, bluetooth does not. However, this is a bluetooth 2.0 device which suppose to work better within a Wifi network, however my other devices are not bluetooth 2. Yet everything works well.

Thus I can safely say this is a good product, and works flawlessly and safely in a mixed wireless environment.

Excellent support for Windows XP including the ever-elusive Stereo Audio support for bluetooth headsets.

Be sure to go to the anycom website and get the latest 5.x version of the software and update the firmware.

I love the size. It's tiny.

Having tried other Bluetooth USB devices, this one is small, with excellent range, and works like a champ.

That being said, it is possible you may experience setup difficulties and range limitations that are of no fault of this device. First, to get better range, BOTH devices, not just this adapter, need to be long range Bluetooth devices. Second, there is only one maker of Bluetooth software for Windoze that I am aware of, and ALL products use it (Widdcom), so they all suffer equally from its shortcomings. This device does appear to have a solid recent version of it though, and the web site offers good support and updates.

In particular, setting up a PocketPC device to use ActiveSync can be a real head-banger. This is NOT the fault of this (or any other) Bluetooth device, but the extremely poor documentation with ActiveSync and Windows Mobile. The key is that you must establish the serial connection over Bluetooth first, note the port number, set that port number in the PS side of Activesync, THEN go to your PDA and set it up there. Failure to do things in this order will result in no "Activesync" checkbox showing up on your PDA when making the connection, and without that they will never, ever talk. Also, even after you get things right on the PC side, unless you delete the old association on your PDA and create a new one, the PDA will not see the new Activesync port, leading you to believe (incorrectly) things are still not setup right on your PC.

But as I said, this is Microsoft's fault, not the adapter's. This is an excellent product.
