I picked up the book because it was mentioned in Investors Business Daily and sounded useful to improving my conversational skills.
The book is clearly written, makes some very good points and does hit most or all of the "how to" for small talk. The problem is that I think everyone knows this and it adds little or no value to meeting and talking to anyone. My reason for that is I want to have conversation not just small talk, and I think that meeting someone and developing a meaningful relationship of any kind requires more than what was presented here.

Years ago I read a book that I say is the gold standard for conversations, small talk, meeting people, and all of life's relationships. That book is "How To Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. If you want to master conversation or meeting people, start with Dale Carnegie's book.

Marvin Brown has managed to create a seminal work on a subject matter that affects most people on a daily basis. He nailed it without being dry and boring. This is not motivational self help nonsense. The author provides easy to use tools that will help anyone become more comfortable in any social situation. I read the book in two sittings and have already begun implementing the strategies. It's been a liberating experience!

I'm been in sales for 20 years, but this little book had some great ideas I never thought of and some approaches I will be using in the future. Well written and worthwhile - I think I'll read it again

As someone who is in the "people" business, I consider myself a pro at talking to clients, listening to their needs, and picking up on unspoken messages. So when I read Marvin Brown's book, I figured it wouldn't have that much to teach me. I was wrong! He breaks the conversation down into its components--starting a conversation, keeping it going (and interesting), using body language, listening, and exiting gracefully. There were many fresh tips and strategies for every type of situation, from parties to first meetings, workplace relationships to sales. I never thought about how important small talk is in my business, and it's one of the areas where I realized I could use more practice. Thanks, Marvin Brown! This book is a winner.

With everyone glued to their ipads and other electronic devices these days, I can't remember the last time a stranger made any attempt at conversation with me! So I hope all of those people will read and benefit from the fine tips offered by Martin Brown throughout this entertaining "How to..." book. And Brown points out that knowing what to say or how to start a conversation isn't the only conversational skill to hone, as listening, making eye contact, entending your hand for a firm handshake are all part of those wonderful well-mannered business skills many of us practiced before the computer age made people act very boorish and self-absorbed by paying attention to the gizmos in their hands rather than the human being standing right next to them!

Common sense advice that most people know but the author spells it out clearly. Instead of dreading awkward situations I seek them out to try out these concepts.
