The Perfect ANYTHING GOES!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Anything Goes (2003 National Theatre's London Cast Recording) (Audio CD)
This is the ultimative ANYTHING GOES-Score! The whole cast is outstanding (especially Sally-Ann Triplett and Anette McLaughlin)and they belt out their songs in a way like never before! But the Arrangements make this CD worth buying! The WHOLE Score is here (including a longer Overture, a differents Interlude and some new Arrangements like for example a little gospel-like part in Blow, Gabriel, Blow and a Tango/Chardasz-Section in Gypsy in Me). The Score is complete and refreshing. Even the Sailor's Chantey has got a new and interesting musical interlude.Everybody who loves ANYTHING GOES has to buy this Soundtrack! P.S.: I hope my English is well enough to understand...

Sally Ann Triplett and a dream cast!,

This review is from: Anything Goes (2003 National Theatre's London Cast Recording) (Audio CD)
This is the cast album to the acclaimed 2003 National Theatre revival of ANYTHING GOES, directed by Trevor Nunn and starring Sally Ann Triplett as Reno Sweeney.Sally Ann Triplett is ideally cast as the singing chaunteuse-turned evangelist, with a cast including John Barrowman as Billy Crocker; Mary Stockley as Hope Harcourt; Simon Day as Sir Evelyn Oakleigh and Annette McLaughlin as Erma. John Barrowman is fine as Billy. Barrowman replaced Howard McGillin in the long-running 1989 London revival (with Elaine Paige as Reno), and is fine in this newest revival, offering up a particularly fetching "All Through the Night" and "It's De-Lovely". Annette McLaughlin (who's credits also include a stint as Velma in London's CHICAGO) is in fine voice as the scene-stealing gun moll Erma, and stops the show cold with her commanding "Buddie, Beware". Mary Stockley's silvery soprano is ideal for the role of Hope and she sings a plaintive "Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye". A major difference between this recording and the previous 2 major cast albums (the '87 Broadway revival and the '89 London revival) is the inclusion of the full Overture, which is quite thrilling. This new ANYTHING GOES is a must-own.

My husband and I saw this play in London last April and fell in love....Cole Porter's music is magic. The show was fantastic and I was so glad to be able to order this cast recording. Sally Ann Triplett and the entire cast are marvelous. It's "De-Lovely!"

Sally Ann Triplett and John Barrowman head the cast in this 2003 London cast recording from Britain's National Theatre. This is the revised 1987 Lincoln Center version of ANYTHING GOES, but this recording does feature a wonderful new (and self-contained) Overture. Performances are lively and there are some brief dialogue segments to place some of the songs in context. There are already many other recordings of ANYTHING GOES - several of this particular revision alone. This album provides a very satisfying listen and covers the entire score, and at 64 minutes never overstays its welcome. The packaging is curious - nowhere on the outside of the package (front cover, J-card) are any of the stars listed. Even the pictures are strangely captionless. In fact, the only place I could find their names was in the cast listing. In the song/track listing it gives the character names (Reno, Billy etc) not the performers, which I find very odd. There is an essay about the show by musical theatre authority Robert Cushman, but no synopsis. I generally prefer U.S. recordings of American shows and British recordings of London shows, but this is one time where the cast of this production got everything right - and the album has been produced with meticulous attention to detail. After hearing selections I immediately made space of my shelf for this one.

I was looking for a new recording of this, my favorite show, and there it was. Little did I know that once I put the disc into the player, I would be treated to an amazing cast recording!

Anything Goes is one of my favorite musicals and this is a terrific production of it. I wish I could have seen John Barrowman in this. Love his voice. I've got several versions of this show on vinyl and CD and this is definitely a worthwhile addition.

Amazing talent,

I'd wanted this album for a while, and once I got it, I couldn't stop listening to it. The songs are great, the performers are just as wonderful, and it makes me sad I was never able to see the show live. I smile and laugh during many of the songs, and based on the tone of the singer, I can almost see the physical movements that go with that part of the song.My favorite song by far has to be 'You're the Top' as sung by John Barrowman and Sally Ann Triplett. It's fun, as well as speaking to the tone and feel of the time. I also enjoy 'It's De-Lovely', as yet another fun song, but one that speaks to love and romance. Overall, the whole album is great, and just shows that no matter how old a show may be, even in this modern world we live in, they can still be wonderfully entertaining.

I just love this Cole Porter musical. Top notch big ensemble British production. So sad some trade union makes it impossible to have a DVD of the show that I had the pleasure to watch in London a decade ago.
