5.0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL FOR COLLECTERS OF FREE-JAZZ BY UNKNOWN MASTERS, December 7, 2004
This review is from: Anything Went (Audio CD)
How many people ever heard of guitarist Bill DeArango? Born in 1921,gigged with Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, Don Byas, Red Norvo, Dizzy Gillespie, and "Lockjaw" Davis to name a few, and ended up in his later years as an unknown (nationally) playing free jazz. On this CD he is joined by fellow Clevelander Joe Lovano and the Schuller brothers (Ed and George) on bass and drums. They play a mix of standards and improvised pieces that display Bill's virtuosity and uniquie free-jazz chops. Have you ever heard an electric guitar made to sound like a baritone or bass sax? Liisten to duet#1 with Lovano. If you collect jazz guitar by the likes of Joe Morris, Henry Kaiser, Marc Ribot, Marc Ducret, Bernard Falaise etc you should add this CD by Bill DeArango. Also, this is an opportuniy to hear Joe Lovano, who generally sticks to mainstream bop, perform some improvised free jazz. Sample the music and I believe you also will be impressed with the bass and drum work of the Schuller brothers.
