Book Description

[Siren Allure: Erotic Cowboy Romantic Suspense] Paramedic Jake McKenna drops to his knees beside the young woman. Beaten, starved, she's barely breathing, burning with fever. He stabilizes her, but when she opens her green eyes and stares, panic-stricken, into his, he realizes this is only the beginning of their relationship. Devlin Barre has been through hell. If her uncle finds her, she's dead. When she looks into the warm brown eyes of the paramedic, she knows deep in her bones she can trust this man with her life. Devlin and Jake grow close, but, fearful of commitment, Devlin runs off to rebuild her life, leaving Jake heartbroken. Five years later, Jake and Devlin meet again. Neither has forgotten a single detail of their time together. Both harbor the secret hope that they can begin again--this time, for keeps. But Devlin isn't the only person who ran off. Her uncle still waits for the right opportunity to get the one person who got away. Note: This book contains rape of the heroine. This book was previously published by another publisher. ** A Siren Erotic Romance

From the Author

My German shepherd puppy is named Jake after my hero of Anytime Darlin', Jake McKenna. He's all man, Jake the hero, that is. My puppy is all boy. Anytime Darlin' is the first romance I ever wrote. It will always have a special place in my heart and it's my husband's favorite book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!! April 22, 2012
Starting out the first page hooked me. Julia Rachel Barrett has such a way of writing, it makes you feel as if the story is real. I feel like I've known the characters in this book forever.

Devlin is a teenager who lost her family in a car accident, and she was the only one who survived. After staying in the hospital to recover she went to live with her Aunt Carolyn and Uncle William. At first everything was going good until her Uncle started beating her Aunt and threatened to kill her if she ever said anything to anyone. Devlin keeps her mouth shut but one day she just can't take him beating on her Aunt Carolyn anymore so she intervenes and cuts him in the leg with a knife. William Franz then takes Devlin to the basement; beats her; rapes her; and then locks her in the basement so she can't get out. Carolyn and Devlin end up finding a way to communicate with each other and Carolyn informs Devlin that her Grandfather left her money and the land to her, and tells her to run and get away. Devlin escapes and almost dies until she is found in a K-Mart under the shelf asleep and on the verge of death.

When Jake McKenna pulls up to rush a teenage girl in critical condition to the hospital he never imagined to find what he did. Devlin he knows there is something different about her than all of his other patients. On the brink of death Devlin is soothed and comforted by the fact that the paramedic Jake stayed by her side through everything. He stayed by her side when she confessed what happened, when she found out her aunt had been killed, and while she was recovering. Jake McKenna has never lost control but when he is around Devlin he just can't help it. There is a connection between them that he just can't describe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Love Story April 19, 2013
By Sadie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book. I have read it multiple times and will read it again many more times.

I absolutely loved Jake and his southern accent. I knew from the start how important he was going to be in Devlin's life. He showed such strong character at such a young age, knowing how to support Devlin when she needed it, and realizing she needed to grow up and find her own place in this world, so he let her go. You could see that he felt a special love for her. She may have been young in years, but what she had endured gave her a maturity in life that some older adults lacked.

Speaking of which, or should I say "witch", I absolutely HATE Janice. Even her name sounds like B**** to me now. She was even older than Jake, (*SPOILER*)had a relationship with him, and then when he went of town she cheated on him, and got pregnant with the other guys kid. You find out all this in the first few pages of book. Her absolute selfishness just made me sick. Here was this poor abused girl, who had lost everyone and everything in her life, and Janice did everything possible to upset any happiness Devlin could have. She so seriously needed to be ran over a bus or something, not her kid, just her!

Devlin, sweet Devlin, she was such a strong young lady. As a child, she endured such loss and sorrow, to go to people who abused and injured her so badly, to come out on the other side a beautiful woman with such strength of character. She was realistic in how she was vulnerable to feeling she wouldn't be enough for Jake, and at the same time she fought for their love. (Again, hate you, Janice!)

I disagree with the reviewer that didn't like the artwork on book. It is a perfect reconstruction of one of their steamy moments towards the end of book. Loved everything about this bool. Thanks Julia!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story! December 2, 2011
When paramedic Jake McKenna responds to a call, he never expects to find an unconscious girl, beaten and fevered. Wide, terror-stricken eyes meet his and their hands clasp as he works to save her. It's soon discovered that the girl, Devlin, has recently lost her immediate family to a car accident. The man who did this to her was her own uncle and guardian, a ruthless man who will do anything to get a hold of Devlin's trust money, including taking her life.

Jake doesn't understand why but they connect on a deeper level and he doesn't leave Devlin's side until she's better. After a kiss between the two that leaves him spooked, Jake takes off to his family's ranch to help with calving. Almost five years pass before they see each other again, but neither has forgotten the feelings they have for one another and soon they're together every day. Devlin loves being with Jake but never feels quite safe; she knows her uncle is still out there and will stop at nothing until she's dead.

Anytime Darlin' is a fabulously suspenseful story of one woman's path from tragedy to joy. There is a part of the story where Devlin chronicles her ordeal at the hands of her uncle, and she includes the telling of her rape. While disturbing, it endears the reader to this character, and we're able to more fully appreciate the anger of the hospital workers and other characters in the story, to share in their emotions.

Jake is a thoroughly compassionate, delicious sexy hero. At a time when Devlin had no family in her life, Jake's presence is a calming balm. Although Devlin is several years younger than him, they make a delightful couple and their smoldering sensuality fairly melts the digital pages. The secondary characters also round out this story, making a decent story even more robust. This is the first story I'd read by this talented author. It certainly won't be my last.

More About the Author

If one word describes me, it's eclectic. Or so my friends say. I'm a lover of books, poetry, art, history, baseball, barbecue, chocolate, coffee, children, animals and the great outdoors. I'm a hospice nurse as well as a writer, but I got my first job at the age of twelve so believe me when I tell you if my heroines are doing it, I've probably done it. At the heart of every one of my stories is a real life event. (Even in Captured!)

If I was pressed to brand my romances, I guess I'd say I write romance for the thinking woman. Or I try. I layer my stories with meaning - I have fun, yes, but I draw on my literary background and I love nothing more than to sprinkle a special pixie dust composed of one part mythos, one part symbolism. I'm quite fond of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung.

Family is everything to me. I keep my kids private, but my mom and dad and my poor husband are occasionally fair game! And I talk about my German shepherd, Jake, all the time.

I am also a hospice nurse and I write nonfiction-- articles for medical and nursing journals. I have a full-length work of nonfiction regarding my experiences with hospice: One Foot In Heaven, Journey of a Hospice Nurse.
