Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Although the Who was one of the most popular British rock bands of the 1960s and '70s, it hasn't been documented as thoroughly as such others as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Now it is, thanks to indefatigable researchers Neill and Kent, who go beyond what the fans are familiar with into the obsessive detail of a day-by-day chronicle listing concerts, recording sessions, record releases, and other events, illustrated by copious photographs and other memorabilia. The book begins in the late '50s, when the band's musicians began playing together in "trad jazz" bands, and continues to the phenomenal success of their groundbreaking rock opera Tommy and subsequent emergence as one of the world's most popular acts, filling stadiums on both sides of the Atlantic. Neill and Kent wisely wrap things up with the death of drummer Keith Moon in 1978. Many feel the band should have done the same thing, but it continues performing to huge crowds of loyal fans who will appreciate this painstaking chronicle. Gordon Flagg

Product Description

This is the most comprehensive book ever written on one of the world’s greatest, and most explosive, rock bands: The Who. Organized by year, Anyway Anyhow Anywhere presents in diary fashion exactly what The Who were doing, where they were doing it, and with whom from 1958-1978. Packed with more than 650 images, this classic day-to-day chronicle of one of the world’s greatest rock bands is now available in a smaller, more portable format. Exhaustive appendices detail concert tours, radio and television gigs, recording sessions, record releases (including UK and US variations), and solo activities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent., October 13, 2002
By Mark Lewisohn (London, England) - See all my reviews
This book is among the crème de la crème of all rock books and the product of sensational original research. The work that Neill and Kent must have put in to uncover all this information and these breathtaking illustrations, many of them never seen before, is simply awesome to consider. The result is no mere list but an absorbing, factually spot-on history, a living, breathing, driving account of the lives of four fascinating and highly original young men. Entwistle, Daltrey, Townshend and Moonie - this is/was your lives. (I heard the authors met with Entwistle and presented him their book just a couple of days before the guitarist died. He returned the compliment by enjoying a long look through the book and signing them a generous message in one of their copies.) This book is not cheap to buy but it is simply packed with love and devotion. Treat yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book shows what The Who was all about!, September 18, 2002
By Bargain (Zwolle, overijssel Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This book beautifully shows the rise, the highlights and ultimately the fall (with Keith Moon's death)of the very best band ever!
Both in words and vision it follows the band, with their payed concerts as a guide-line.
A lot of the images in it are shown for the very first time, which makes it a unique document in itself.
As said by the authors, The Who were not as televised, interviewed, and exposed in a way for example The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were in those early days.
Which makes this book a great effort!
Ofcourse this is must-read for Who-fans, but it is also a great
document for anyone who is interested in music-history, or the social movements seen in Britain in the sixties and seventies.
Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Coffee table Who, March 24, 2008
By PHILIP S WOLF (SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA. USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
As an happy owner of many, many books about The Who and Townshend, Moon, Entwistle and Daltrey, this coffee table style hardbound edition is one of the better things out there available for purchase.

This book, serves as an timeline of all things: "Who" from 1958-1978 {When Keith passed away, it has never really been The Who, since that Time onwards.} At 304 pages, this day-by-day diary of the band, is very good, and the information included herein will give lot's of insight for new fans of this great group. But, for us: 'ol-timers', the wealth of the contents of: "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhwere", lies in the photos and graphic work that has been included here. Lot's of this material has not been reproduced outside of England since the sixties and seventies, and even all you hard-core, Who fanatics out there, HAVE NOT seen a lot of these wonderful photo's before.

Again, there are plenty of books about: The Who and it's members on the shelves, and you should shop around to see which one is for you. But, if I were to rate any Who book as perfect for your living room coffee table, this one along with: "The Who~Maximum R&B" by Richard Barnes, would indeed fill that purpose just fine.

This is a big, fun, meaty. beaty & bouncy, visual history of The Who.
Four Stars !!!
