Edit: This review was written several years ago. This charger will not work for the iPad 2 and later models.

I have this, a solar powered battery charger and the full iGo charger for laptops. This little unit is the one I found most useful during my recent travels in an undeveloped country. This charger is compact, light and best of all, provides a full charge for my iPad, iPod and Droid. That said, it isn't possible to charge an iPad and any other gadget at the same time. The iPad pulls down too much power, but it is possible to charge two lower power items (i.e., a Droid and iPod Touch) simultaneously.

You do not need to purchase iGo cables and tips if you prefer not to - except for the iPad. The USB slot accepts the cables which were sent with your gadgets.

NOTE: The correct iGo tip for iPad is the A61, which is an older tip from the days of the first iPod. The current iPod tip (A133, or something like that) won't work for the iPad.

I can't tell you how much I love this product. I have an iPhone. The normal battery life is ok but not that great. I was at an all day event and needed to check my emails multiple times and be ready for a call from home as I had a sitter there. My phone started to die. A friend loaned me her iGo. I plugged it into my phone for just a little bit (I was worried about using all her spare energy), maybe 20 minutes. I had enough juice in my iPhone for another hour, maybe more, I don't know because after that I put it on my car charger. Anyway, that was my first intro to iGo.

I have a website. I received an iGo charger complimentary to test. Let me say, I NEVER also write Amazon reviews for things I receive in a similar nature. For the sake of disclaimer I have to throw this out there, but let me clarify I live in La Jolla and I can buy my own gadgets. :)

All that aside, I LOVE THIS. I probably would pay 3x the price for it because for my lifestyle, I need the extra charge. We travel a lot overseas. This does not need a voltage converter which for me is huge since we travel to London and Hong Kong a lot where the voltage is different (you'll still need a cheap plug converter, but not an actual voltage converter). It's small and I don't notice it in my purse or diaper bag. My daughter has an iTouch that she plays educational games on and all sorts of other electronic devices. iGo can boost almost all of them. For a long haul flight, this is a necessity for parents and children.

And how awful is it when the battery in your digital camera dies? I am constantly forgetting to monitor the battery life in my camera. I'm a busy mom, I forget. So now I don't have to worry about it since I have an iGo.

I have used the iGO portable battery for over a year now and really like it. Some people complain about it not charging a smart phone, but I think the issue is leaving the phone on. With my Blackberry, it will charge the phone twice in a couple of hours each as long as the phone is turned off. When the phone is left on it drains the charger battery without increasing the phone charge. I believe the Blackberry disables the battery saving mode and transmits in full power whenever it is connected to external power, which drains the phone and iGO instead of charging it. This would make sense for other smartphones, so just turn it off and charge it for a half hour and you are back in business.

iGO seems to have the best value for the money for rechargeable chargers. To get a similar Duracell or Ray-O-Vac product, you'd have to spend nearly $100. Extremly high capacity - this one is 1800 mAh - enough to charge my 900 mAh phone battery twice, or my 300 mAh Garmin watch 6 times. iGO also makes one that is 3400 mAh for like $70.

This items recharges very quickly - around an hour. iGo has a lot of other good products, too.

I wish I could give this a positive review because it's a great idea. I bought this at the recommendation of my Verizon salesperson, for a backup, portable charging unit while on the go. It's a great idea, but this just doesn't have enough juice to charge my Motorola Droid 3. I thought there was something wrong with the unit when I plugged it in to my Droid, it lit up for about 15 seconds then shut off. I made sure the unit was fully charged, tried it with my phone turned completely off and on. Still wouldn't stay on long enough to even make a call. I tried it on a smaller LG flip phone and it worked fine. The salesman at the store plugged it into his Droid, but I don't know what version (it wasn't the 3)and it stayed on as well. I even exchanged it for another identical unit, thinking the unit itself was bad, but it did the same thing. So while it works for less powerful phones, it doesn't work for the Morotola Droid 3.

At best, it only provides half a charge for a Samsung smart phone. I tried it with my Captivate Glide, and with my friend's Galaxy Epic, and that was all I was able to get out of it, charging each phone separately, not even charging them together. It takes 4 hours to fully charge it up for charging, and then it only gives you half a charge? Unacceptable! Worse yet, I paid $50 for it at the AT&T store to find this out. Don't bother!
