Book Description

May 9, 2007
A bitter newspaper reporter holds court in a decrepit bar in a dying Rust Belt town. A peasant family disintegrates within a tropical society on the verge of revolution. A bus driver laments his job during a uniquely monotonous trip through the dreary Midwestern landscape. A shell-shocked war correspondent wanders aimlessly in frigid French Canada. An Ecuadorian woman toils in an American sweatshop, only to return to despair and infidelity at home. These and other characters both ordinary and extraordinary populate Anywhere but Here. Set in a variety of locales - from Ohio to South America - the stories and vignettes that comprise this collection raise questions about identity, permanence, and the quiet struggle to find meaning in a seemingly senseless world. In an age of globalization and instant interconnection, Anywhere but Here offers a subtle examination of events and emotions that divide us but, at the same time, unite us in shared isolation.

4.0 out of 5 stars great variety, September 13, 2007
By
T. Chicana (Cleveland, OH USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anywhere but Here (Paperback)
The most interesting thing about this collection is that the author writes in a variety of different voices in a convincing way. Anyone who's toiled at a daily newspaper will appreciate the one about the sad reporter. There's a lot of sadness here, the kind of short stories that kind of put you in a funk! But in a good way.

I bumped into the author in an unlikely setting and immediately ordered this book, and I'm glad I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas, Christmas, Christmas! Short Stories Perfect for Stuffing a Stocking This Holiday Season!, December 9, 2009
This review is from: Anywhere but Here (Paperback)
From "Christmas on the Rocks," a true holiday tale for our times -- and a story featured in this book:

"Downtown Reliance, Ohio, embraced Christmas Eve like a little boy forced into an awkward and unwelcome holiday hug with an obese great-aunt reeking of well-fermented halitosis, mothball-dusted velvet, perm solution, mentholated Misty Lights, and decaffeinated Folgers spiked with saccharine, non-dairy creamer, and peppermint schnapps. That is to say that impending Christmas seemed an awkward fit with the town I call home. But that is the way it had always seemed to me, ever since I gave up running away to exotic locales (At least, as exotic as I could afford at that particular moment in time; one year it was Steubenville.) every Christmas and instead resigned myself to hunkering down for the holidays in the little post-industrial, bucket-kicking burg."
