MAP Anza-Borrego Desert Region

So its early spring and you have contacted the visitor center in Anza Borrego in hopes of scheduling your visit at the height of the wildflower bloom. But as long as you are traveling deep into rural San Diego County to the largest state park in the 48 contiguous states, you may as well explore the rest of it. Is this a good map to take with you? Sure, but with some caveats.

Pluses: It is printed on waterproof and tear resistant paper and colors are nice. One side shows the whole park and surrounding lands; the other details certain recreational regions, notably Bow Willow, Coyote Creek, and of course the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicle Recreation Area: a place where you too can get your car stuck in the sand. Still, my off roading friends tell me this is a lot of fun.

Neutral: Hiking trails don't show up quite as well here as on other Wilderness Press maps: usually they are bright red dashed lines. On this map, they are small dashed black lines. But they are still legible, if you know what you are looking for. A good guidebook to locate the trail heads helps, and this brings us to the...

Negative: Really only one. Why pay almost $10 for a map when you can get the map and the book on Amazon for only $12.21. For less than $3, you get so much more with the accompanying guide book by Lowell and Diana Lindsay. Considering the price differential, I cannot recommend the map as a stand alone. Get both the book and map, and then go enjoy this spectacular springtime park.

Great map of the Anza-Borrego desert region. But the deal is sweeter if you buy Anza-Borrego Desert Region: A Guide to State Park and Adjacent Areas of the Western Colorado Desert by Diana Lindsay. This excellent 300 page guide of the area is about $4 more AND includes this map. In any event, you don't need to purchase both the book and map like I did, unless you want two maps.
