4.0 out of 5 stars I am a patient, not the surgeon., February 12, 2009

This review is from: Aortic Arch Surgery: Principles, Strategies and Outcomes (Hardcover)
A have taken basic college level anatomy and physiology classes of the type one takes to be a paramedic or nurse, and am facing surgery on my aortic root and arch for an aneurysm associated with my bicuspid aortic valve. I wished to educate myself on the procedure so I could have a more meaningful discussion with my surgeon and a better understanding of what I am going to experience. It has served this purpose well. I of course do not understand a good part of it, not being a surgeon, but the information and illustrations have cleared up my questions and eased my fears. It is also great for show and tell with friends and family who are curious and concerned about what I am going through. I have not found a meaningful guide for patients of this type of surgery, and I would recommend those of you in the business of educating patients make use of this book in your conversations, or write a non-condescending version for patients and family. (I find the general "So you are having heart surgery..." patient booklets to be overly simple and can't imagine that a person who would get to the point of knowing they are having surgery wouldn't already know all that stuff.)
