I was pleasantly surprised how well this station works. the iron heats up quickly and holds heat very well even when soldering multiple points.

I purchased this iron and it was working very well. There was an initial smell that quickly went away after an hour or so of use. The main problem I had was that the plastic nut on the iron handle cracked when used at a higher temperature. I contacted the US distributor and they quickly sent me two replacement parts which appear to be made of a much higher quality material than the original. It's good to see that this product is backed by quality customer service even if the "bargain" aspect of the iron shows some times.

I'll update this review if I have any additional problems, but as of now I'd recommend this iron to anyone on a budget.

I've only had the Aoyue 936 for a few weeks, so I can't say it is of the quality of a Weller, but it was about 1/3 the price of a similar unit from Weller, so I bought it.
It heats up quickly, and in spite of coming with a small pointed tip, it was able to heat a 5 wire junction easily.
The build quality seems to be good.

I researched many soldering stations before I purchased this unit. I was on a tight budget and this fell right into my price line. The directions are very clear and include breakdown diagrams for repair and cleaning. Also included was a replacement heating element. The unit heats up very quickly. This was a great upgrade from my old solder pencil.

As a side note, the included holder does work, it goes in at a angle and sets very securely. As for heat, I have not noticed any extreme heat on the handle.

Overall I am very satisfied with this unit and I am impressed with the build quality. If you are on a tight budget as I was, this would be a good purchase!

UPDATE, 03/25/2014: I thought I would post an update to how the Iron is working. It works GREAT! I still stand behind my original review and if this unit ever does go out I would not hesitate to buy another one! For context of my usage I am using the Iron to build small DC based projects. The Iron has been reliable from day one and I use it at least 3-4 times a month with an average session of 2-4 hours at a time. Also, at this time I have not replaced the heating element!Even more surprising, I am still using the original tip that came with the iron!

I used this soldering iron for everything from large 1/2W rated through hole resistor installations to SMD microprocessor soldering. By adjusting the temperature it was extremely easy to perform the tasks at hand.

I would turn this on and leave it on for hours at a time while populating a large board full of components without any issue of the handle getting too hot.

I have also used the solder spool holder as well. It works well, but I think I prefer not to string out a big line of solder across my desk, so I don't use it much. The added sponge is nice for a quick clean in the middle of a delicate job.

The iron comes with a spare heating element, which I haven't had to use yet. The build quality of this product is very good and solid feeling. I would not be surprised if this lasts me 20+ years.

I wish I'd gotten this iron before.

I was going to purchase a Hakko 936, but then they discontinued them and replaced them with the clown-looking FX-888. This soldering station is very professional looking and includes a solder dispenser built into the iron stand. The sponge is small but I think the solder holder makes up for it. The stand doesn't hold the iron as nice as a Hakko 936, but it holds it without falling out easily so I am not really concerned. I worked at a place where we used Hakko 936, and it works just as well as a Hakko 936, so I am very impressed at the quality for the price. If you are looking for an inexpensive soldering iron for your workstation, you can't go wrong with the Aoyue. Since this station is 1/2 the price of comparable Weller and Hakko stations, I really can't complain about the minor issues.

This soldering station seems to be an excellent value. I've had it for about a week. Had no problems at all. Heats up fast and holds temperature well. Shipping from the distributor was very prompt. It takes Hakko repalcement tips, which are readily available.

I've used wand/pen solder guns for quite a while and while I am quite please with their price point, their performance is generally lacking. Temperatures all over the place and tips that seem to be made of the most corrosive element on earth. I had a large, fairly complicated project coming up and thought I'd upgrade a bit and it has made a tremendous improvment in both the quality of the solder joints I can now make as well as the entire experience.

I've had one for a few months now and it's definitely not a piece of junk. Like others have said, the handle gets hot - but it doesn't get painful. The iron heats up quickly and stays hot.

The only thing to keep in mind with this guy is that it's a 35W iron, which makes it difficult to do anything but very delicate soldering work. It's not quite the all-around workhorse that the 60W Hakkos that it knocks off are.
