Product Description

Cleans your soldering iron tips without water and is faster and better than a sponge! Made from coils of brass, which are softer than the tip plating yet hard enough to lessen oxidation To clean the tip, simply plunge the iron tip into the coils. This cleans better than a wet sponge and won't reduce the tip temperature.

Customer Reviews

Nice heavy base.
Robot Power
It cleans a hot soldering tip with just a quick wipe, much more effectively than a wet sponge and without lowering the temperature of the tip.
Maxwell Johnson
This is one of the best ideas ever for soldering use.

I was debating between this and the Hakko ball-style sponge holder. After using this one, I'm very pleased with my choice. Stabbing the iron down in to the sponge feels very stable, natural, and comfortable. Stabbing sideways at a ball-style holder seems like it would be awkward. Also, this holder is lower profile (only 1.125" high), so it fits easily into my soldering kit. I've found that I use its built-in iron stand a lot when tinning very small wires (easier to set the iron down and drag the wire across the tip, rather than vise-versa).

Excellent cleaner. Well worth the money.

SIDE NOTE -
I noticed another reviewer mentioned applying flux to his wire sponge to help it "absorb solder", and that (not surprisingly) it didn't have the desired effect. A couple things to point out...

1) The point of a wire sponge or a wet sponge is to improve heat transfer by "shocking" the oxides off your already cleaned and tinned tip. This is most obvious when using a wet sponge, as the correct motion is a quick tap of the tip on the sponge (like you're touching a surface with your finger to see if it's hot) not the long, slow wipe that would be required to remove excess solder.

2) If you wind up with excess solder on your tip, use desoldering braid to wick away the excess. There are only a handful of cases where this should occur. 90% of the time you should be applying the solder to your work piece not your iron, and the capillary force of the work piece should keep the solder where it belongs.

PACE has an excellent series of "learning to solder" and "reworking" videos that they've graciously made available on YouTube. I highly recommend them. They're a little dated, but the basics haven't changed.

This is a small stainless steel cup containing a coiled brass sponge. It cleans a hot soldering tip with just a quick wipe, much more effectively than a wet sponge and without lowering the temperature of the tip. Although the cup is quite lightweight, a rubber disk on the bottom prevents sliding on the workbench. The sponge is replaceable but I cannot imagine it wearing out in any normal lifetime of use.

I don't know who invented this kind of tip cleaner but it works remarkably well for very little money.

Highly recommended if you do any significant amount of soldering.

Like many other reviewers here, I've been using a wet sponge for years to tin and clean my soldering iron. It may have taken me a while to finally hit the "order" button for this Aoyue brass tip cleaner, but I'm glad I did; I'm completely sold on it now. My tip-tinning is a lot more consistent than with a wet sponge, and the brass keeps the temperature drops to a minimum when cleaning off the tip. The holder itself is solid-feeling and doesn't slide around on my desk. It also has a flip-up soldering iron stand; handy for those who need it, but I appreciate that it folds down out of the way for those who already have a holder for their iron, too.

Highly recommended for any and every solderer! I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase.

This works way better than a moldy, ripped, ratty sponge. It looks and feels like a higher quality product than the Hakko "dome" tip cleaner. It can also be used as a soldering iron stand if you're not klutzy.

Unlike the 3 Wolves T-Shirt or the Tuscan Milk, this product will change my life. This keeps the iron hot, clean, and easy. The old way of using a sponge is stupid. A few quick stabs into the media and bam shiny and clean. As well you get to stab something a few times which kind of helps when your soldering tiny things it helps the stress!

Suprisingly, I order both on accident. Much like other reviewers stated the Hakko version of this, is a gold plated plastic orb, which looks, nice but is very light. This Aoyue tip cleaner is much nicer! the honestly, it looks better in person than the Hakko too. It's a weighted more, it's a stainless steel bottom (I believe), and makes a forgiving target. It's about 2.5" diameter.. not tiny, as I thought it would be. I actually bought this for portability.. I cut off some brass wool, and stuffed it in a smaller tin. If shipping wasn't an obstacle I'd return the Hakko one.

No problems with this cleaner. Nice heavy base. Brass cleaning wool works like it should. We don't use the iron holder so I can't comment on that.

Like this better than the ball-shaped Hakko cleaner.

This works much better than a sponge to keep my soldering tips clean. No more dealing with smelling burnt sponges when cleaning tips. Just be careful if you move it around or else you might get tiny balls of solder everywhere.
