Feel free to burn as many dollars as I did on this title and watch a clearly energetic, well-meaning author get eaten alive by the Green Monster of Apache projects that is the Tomcat Server. You'll feel your blood rise as the author steps up to the challenge, waving an ambitious, fearless outline of topics and committing fully to dispatching them. Installation! Configuration and deployment! Performance Tuning! Integration with HTTPd! Security! Logging! Troubleshooting! Monitoring, Clustering, Upgrading, Advanced Configuration! Even ITIL standards for managing the software! By gum, it's all there and more!

Then, sink back into your seat as bit by bit, the author punts on one detailed technical discussion after another, raises a multitude of topics only to wave them off as "tricky" subjects, providing instead a trivial diagram and a link to "more information" (the admin version of "just read the source"). Wonder if he will, yet again, list a configuration file as if it was self-evident. Wince as he glosses several related technologies in a manner not unlike someone who is slowly finding out that explaining a subject with passion and cheer might work in a classroom of students who don't know what they're listening to, but not on paper.

Some of the discussion is so much more weird than it is wrong, you might just think it's you, having a bad day. Here's the first of several statements I keep trying to parse: "It's always mandatory to define the Document Type Definition (DTD) for the resource in the application web.xml." This sentence appears several paragraphs in under the heading "DataSource for Oracle.

Not a bad book but I didnt love it either. At times it was hard to follow and a bit wordy for me personally.

I found a free chapter of this book online. That is the best chapter of the book. I thought the whole book would be interesting. But not that much!

I like the book because the Author gave not just theory, but a lot of step by step practical hands on information.

So the book can be used two-flod. As a book that gives you a good understanding of Tomcat 7 and a manual that guides you with step by step instructions for different implementations of Tomcat.

The Book addresses 5 main areas that were well covered.
Tomcat installation on Linux and Windows, configuration, Web server setup, Security, and trouble-shooting issues.
