Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?The history of the six tribes of Native Americans known collectively as Apache is summarized in this attractive book that includes information on the work and dress of men, women, and children; government; ceremonies; raiding and war; the effects of white explorers and settlers; reservations; and life today. Sneve's text is not exhaustive, but it does provide some detailed information. Himler's atmospheric oil paintings expand on the words to give readers a fuller appreciation of the subject. Attributed quotations from Apache people are sprinkled throughout the book. Sneve also acknowledges the assistance of several Native American experts and museums. The "New True" series (Children's Press) on Native American tribes is easier to read; for slightly older children, this book is a better choice.?Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA

From Booklist

Gr. 3^-6. Part of the First Americans Book series, this provides a handsomely illustrated overview of the culture and history of the six tribes that make up the Apache nation. Sneve's text is quiet and direct, whether she is talking about government, family life and gender roles, or warfare. With the same restraint, she describes the betrayal and hostility of the U.S. government, including the practice, until 1913, of identifying reservation people by number and not by name. She ends with an upbeat view of Apache life today. Himler's warm watercolors show particular articles of clothing, ceremonies, art, etc., as well as dramatic sweeping action scenes of people on horseback. There are brief quotes from Apache people, including Geronimo, and a map shows the location of Apache groups before reservations and now. Hazel Rochman

5.0 out of 5 stars A VIVID ACCOUNT OF APACHE LIFE, March 3, 2004
This review is from: The Apaches (First Americans Books) (Hardcover)
"Be grateful for our land," an Apache chieftain's daughter once cautioned. "It gives us all we have."

Today there are some 50,000 Apaches in the United States who have adapted to modern society, while maintaining their cherished heritage and traditions. The Apaches by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, illus. by Ronald Himler is the saga of these remarkable people, a vivid account of their government, family life, ceremonies, and conflicts.
