I purchased the play after seeing it a few years ago. It has moments when your eyes tear up from laughter (a character mentions getting turned on by a documentary on animal mating habits), and also moments when the characters feel entirely vulnerable and human (the woman tells the story of how she discovered her ex cheating on her). There is enough foreshadowing that I had an idea of where the ending was headed, but others in the audience audibly gasped at the final twist.

For those out there interested in reading this play for the possibility of producing it, do it. It's a great show. The scenes and sets are supposed to flow into each other, so it's ideal for a small space. The biggest downfall is that the cast has 1 female role and about 4 male roles (thus perfectly perpetuating the claim that only 20% of roles in theatre are for women). That said, the female role is the main character, and it's a juicy role if you have a great actress for it. Two of the male characters are large roles, and the others are minor characters.

If you are an actor looking to buy this play for potential monologues, I wouldn't. The female character has a couple of great monologues (including a plea for donations to a public broadcasting network in which she claims that Big Bird will die if they don't get enough money), but as with any great monologues, they're horribly overused for auditions. There are a couple of shorter monologues for the men, but they seem tricky to use out of the context of the play.

If you are looking for scenes to use (for classes or for competitions), this one has male/female scenes, and male/male/female scenes, but that's it.

It's one of my favorite plays to read. I recommend picking it up.

This play is amazing. I'm a theatre major and was introduced to it this semester during an acting class - I had to act out the religious lunch scene between Annie and Elliot. It went well, but I completely fell in love with the play when I read it to know what was going on.

Oddly enough, The Purple Rose (Jeff Daniel's theatre in Chelsea, MI) was showing it these past months. I didn't get to go see it, but I bet it was awesome.

Regarding Amazon though, I was really amazed with their speedy shipping. I was told 5 days. So, when I wasn't expecting it for a couple more days and it showed up, I was really happy. Good job, Amazon!

Apartment 3A is a fast paced, funny, perfect-for-small-theatres play about a woman's coming to love amidst self doubt, work hatred, and ghosts. Very well written dialogue leads to a surprising denoument. Impressive from Daniels. Recommended.
