I saw this several times on videotape and hopefully it will be on DVD soon, because it is an enjoyable film. Jeanne Crain and William Holden play a young post WWII couple who are expecting their first child, but because of the housing crisis while he is finishing his education, they only have a temporary place to live which will soon have to vacated. Enter the retired University Professor, who feels at the prime of his life and a widower, that he shouldn't wait for nature to make him weaker and more useless, so he contemplates that after he finishes his last work, he will end it all, so to speak. However, Jeanne Crain's character Peggy bumps into the professor and in her excessive bubbling over, she gets him to admit that the housing administrator is a good friend of his, so she convinces him to let her say that she is also a friend, so she can more easily find a place to live. Only, once there the good friend of his knows of the professor's plan to end it all and sends Peggy and her husband over to the professor's available attic. Throughout the film, we see Peggy's growing hunger for knowledge and realize the hard time young brides had that weren't attending college to keep up with their husbands' education... how Peggy corners the retired professor to begin teaching again is one of the useful means that benefits all. It's a very bittersweet film... not sugarcoated with everything goes perfectly, but instead with the determination to thrive.

I am still disappointed that "Apartment for Peggy" is not available on DVD. It is a wonderful film depicting life after WWII. Many of the returning GI's were going to college on the GI bill and trying to raise families at the same time. This film takes an insightful look at a special time in our history. It covers its topic with much warmth, love and humor. Jeanne Crain and William Holden play the young couple renting a room from the incomparable Edmund Gwenn. Edmund Gwenn is mourning the loss of his son who was lost in the war and his wife, as well. The young couple give him a new reason to live. It's a gem that needs to get its due and be released on DVD!!!!!!!

This is a lovely movie that is extremely progressive in it's social outlook. Very positive look at the potential of America following WW2. Did you know Hollywood proposed day care centers for married college students in 1948?

One of the great movies that dealt with WWII veterans and their return to civilian life that is almost forgotten today. Like director George Seaton's "Miracle on 34th Street" the year before, "Apartment for Peggy" mixes drama with humor. Seaton gets a wonderful performance from Jeanne Crain. The role of Peggy fits her like a glove. If there was a movie where she deserved a Best Actress nomination, it's for this role, I think; she's a force of nature as a 19-year-old mother-to-be. William Holden as Peggy's husband Jason, and Edmund Gwenn as a retired college professor are also good, with Gwenn being particularly poignant as a lonely widower who reluctantly takes the couple into his home. I wish @Fox_Video had given this film the DVD A-treatment. It deserved a decent restoration (it was filmed in Technicolor) and commentary along with some extras. When released, the New York Times said it was one of the best films of the year. The on-demand DVD transfer is okay, with many of the interior scenes a little too dark. The sound is fine and the film itself holds up very well. Four stars for the movie, but 2.5 for the DVD quality. Still, I'm glad I purchased this DVD. I've been waiting for it to become available for years.

I was THRILLED to finally find Apartment for Peggy. We had taped this movie a long time ago when it was playing a then channel with no commercial interruptions. The channel at the time would have advertisements before and after the movie played but not during. So the taped version was the only copy we had. I have been looking literally for years for this movie and I was ecstatic to find it available. The actors Jeanne Crain, William Holden and Edmund Gwenn played their roles perfectly. Very genuine, warm and so funny. Some may consider this movie to have a simple story line, but look a little deeper and you'll see how these situations could transport to this day an age. Returning service men struggling to make ends meet with limited finances. They are trying to support a family with basic needs while at the same time trying to further their education. You learn about sacrifices people have to make, the sadness and loss due to a miscarriage and of lonely people who no longer feel needed or useful. It is a tender hearted movie, very enjoyable and a great date night movie. In the end things don't end perfectly but they are back on track leaving the viewer with hope.

Apartment for Peggy is one of the sweetest movies ever made. Edmund Gwenn, Jeanne Crain, and William Holden all give outstanding performances in a story about a post-WW II student couple who help a retired professor value life again.

Please, Fox, release this wonderful movie on DVD!!
