Heather Muzik writes about a topic that is not discussed often, and raises questions about how it can possible for a mother to abuse everyone around her - her husband, her daughters, her sister, her daughters boyfriend. There are many instances in real life of couples staying together 'for the children's sake', this book gives the reader a very good reason why that is not always a good option.
This is a well written, thought provoking book and I look forward to reading more of Ms Muzik's work.

I wanted to like this book, I really did. But, what I couldn't get past....there is no story. Every single chapter just rehashes what a total and complete witch this woman is and how her husband is just a spineless loser. I ended up disliking him more than his wife. Yes, supposedly he loved his kids so much, that he had to put up with her for their sake...yeah, you don't put those you love through this kind of hell, much less still be sexually attracted to this monster.
I do give this book an extra half star for the ending (two and half stars, I just couldn't give it three). I could have read chapter one, a middle chapter and the last chapter from this book and not missed out on anything.

Heather Muzik has written a superb drama about domestic violence in a seemingly cozy middle-class relationship. The novel provides tense and thought-provoking situations full of dark and incredibly realistic actions. How is it possible for a highly educated person with a career and resources to stay in a marriage with an abusive spouse? The twist? The abuser - it's the wife. I've always said that I would never be caught in an abusive relationship, as I'd be out of it at the first sign of a problem, but after reading this book I realized that it really isn't that simple. This portrayal of obsession with a diabolical sociopath will send a shiver down your spine as it reveals possible real-life implications of domestic abuse. This novel delivers page turning despair with an ever-present hope for a better situation for the characters.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book. It is dark and definitely an emotionally taxing read, but its one of those that will forever stay with you. From the very first page, the reader is sucked into the twisted, diabolical, abusive and seductive world of Victoria. I would highly recommend this to any (adult) and encourage you to bump it up to the front of your "to read" list.

I think the book was really a good read and hard to put down but I also think that the language could have been toned down without taking away from the story.

This is a heart-rending story about a mother driven by her mental illness, a father torn between his pride and his family, and the children caught in the midst of their clashes.

Victoria is gorgeous and flirtatious, but she's also out of control, manipulative, and a danger to the people she supposedly loves the most. Her children are trapped and terrified, and her husband is simply trying to protect everyone and keep their heads above water. I won't tell you if he succeeds, only that the ending is extraordinarily satisfying.

I really identified with the husband, Chris. The author paints him into a corner and then beautifully portrays the anguish he goes through every day. All he wants is a normal family, but he ends up trapped by the consequences of his own decisions. It takes a monumental effort to break the dark cycle that Victoria has created in their family.

The book was a complete - and wonderful - surprise. I started it thinking that it seemed like an interesting read. By the time I was finished, it felt more like I had fallen down a rabbit hole and barely escaped with my life. The book is intense, as I said, and the emotional roller-coaster ride left me exhausted by the time I put the book down and discovered that it was four a.m. and I could not get it out of my head.

That said, this book probably won't be for everybody. It isn't a comfortable read. There are themes of mental and physical abuse, family loyalty, and the pain of loving someone who uses people to further their own ends. But if you have ever lived with someone who takes crazy to the next level, or been responsible for children that are in that person's line of fire, then it is important that you read this book. You'll be astonished that there are people like this in the world (there are), and that they are probably closer than you think (they are). In fact, I would guess that you know a few of them, at least in passing. I do.

I couldn't put Apathetic down from beginning to end it had my full attention. Some books take a few chapters before they hook me, this wasn't the case with this page turner. The characters and the plot were well thought out and flowed from one chapter to the next. The ending was great, I didn't see it coming. I've recommended this book to a few friends their opinion of it was similar to mine. Disturbing subject matter at times due to the extreme behavior of a this sad dysfunctional family. I've already uploaded 2 more of this authors (Heather Muzik) books to my Kindle acct. I'm sure I'll enjoy them just as much as "Apathetic".
