5.0 out of 5 stars great pill cutter
I bought this because my old cutter's blade got loose. This is one fine pill cutter. The pills go into this slip-resistant place, then after the blade cuts them, the cut halves drop into a well. That means you don't have to empty the thing after every cut. Just 5 minutes before writing this I cut a bottle of meds. I'd buy another one of these in a second.

This product works best if you're cutting a hard, medium- or large-sized, round pill in half. It keeps the pill in place with a rubber grip while you're cutting it, and then neatly contains the two halves in a compartment.

However, if you're cutting a pill into quarters, things become more difficult. It is hard to position a pill half in the splitter so that evenly split quarters are obtained. The blade is covered by plastic, which confers a blunting effect that tends to crush or chip some pills, especially small or soft ones.

Despite the crushing effect of the blade's plastic cover, this product is very safe. You do not need to worry about cutting your fingers on the blade while positioning a pill.

Another difficulty when using this product is cutting large, oblong pills. It is difficult to position the pill so that the blade splits the pill evenly, regardless of whether you are attempting to split down the long axis or the short axis. Some oblong pills do not even fit in the splitter so that they can be split down the short axis.

Finally, while this product is quite useful for cutting certain kinds of pills, it is a bit on the expensive side, especially considering its limitations.

I got this for my Mom who has to split one of her medications in half. Every month when she gets her prescription she sits down and splits the entire 30 day supply in half. It only take a couple of minutes and she's done. She's very happy with this product. Before she used a sharp knife and was constantly retrieving pill halves off the floor. This product does a good job of containing the halves and makes splitting the pills in half much more accurate. This is a great product for the elderly and those with sight impairment.

Very simple to use - excellent design. Set pill onto its stage, bring down lid, pill easily splits and then halves are stored into a small well for quick and easy retrieval. Cut several in several seconds and can be safely stored and preserved Appreciate its ease and the earlier positive reviews that led me to this one instead of trial-and-error with others. Got mine from drugstore.com for $6+

I have purchased two over the past 8 months, and both have broken in the same fashion. Why Apex decided to use brittle plastic instead of something flexible is beyond me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Breaks too easy, April 20, 2009
I am on my second one in less than a year, and it is already broken. The blade protector, which is a sheet of plastic is the first thing to break.
To continue to use it, You then have to remove the protector which exposes the blade.

I would not buy again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Device, July 31, 2008

This product works much much better than I had expected. It has a super sharp blade which is enclosed in a sheath while it is open. Place the tablet on the device, close the lid and the sheath retracts and very neatly cuts the tablet.

It is a bit like a guillotine, and is actually fun to use!

There is a reservoir or well just below the cutting surface (it's blue in the photos, as is the cutting area) so cut tablets can fall into the well. You can cut around 12-15 tablets before emptying the cut tablets from the reservoir back into the pill bottle.

Highly recommended. I've been using mine for around 2-3 years and the hinge is beginning to get a bit sticky, so I ordered 3 more to have in reserve...it is that good and valuable!

No pill segments flying on the floor, and absolutely no chance of a cut finger.

Try it, you will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for small pills, September 15, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have a bunch of small pills that need cut in 1/2's & 1/4's. This pill cutter is great for that. I also have a large, thick pill that I need cut in 1/2's that I prefer a different pill cutter for. This one will cut large pills, but it is a little cumbersome.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've tried more than a dozen pill splitters, looking for just the right one. Of them all, THIS is the best., May 10, 2011

First of all, let me start by throwing my qualifications out there. I am terminally ill and LITERALLY in a fight for my life. I, at present, take 34 medications, of every shape and size you can imagine. I've gone through the gamut of more than a dozen pill splitters. Most worked, though to varying degrees of success. Some require you to change the pill form to cut different meds. Some don't have protection guards over the razor. Some don't close shut so the pill will drop into the pill box. This does ALL of those things, and at a better price than most. PLUS, it's sturdy. If your hands shake, like mine do, and you drop this, it'll be fine. (And the pill will stay in the box, since the lid closes down over it as you cut it. There is NO NEED to change pill forms or razors. The unique wedge design will fit ANY pill as you push it up between the edges. And it cuts like a dream. (Just used it to cut my evening meds, and it did them all in about 2 minutes.) Bottom line, I've tried nearly all of them, and this is the one that gets my 5 star vote. Choose this one over the others, and you won't regret it.
Thanks for your time folks.
Sincerely, R.A. McDowell

I bought this splitter less than five months ago. Right from the start, I knew that I had made a bad choice. Instead of cleanly and neatly splitting the pill on the perforated line, it pulverized the pills into dust. After three uses, the hinge became difficult to open/close. After five uses, the hinge completely broke and this splitter is in the garbage. It does not even deserve one star.
