5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and Reliable comes at a great price!
I bought this DVD player at a ridiculously low price, lower than the one listed above and at first was very skeptical because I thought for sure the performace wasn't going to be comparibly great. After 8 months of use I can say that I am actually looking to get another one. What I like about it is that it's very simple and easy to use, throw out the manual and...

I got the Apex AD-1201 in December of 2002. It is not hard to set up when you read the directions. I got a few pros and cons to say.

PROS: The player is easy to use and understand. The price was cheap, being only $59.95 at Circuit City. I like the MP3, Kodak picture CD, and JPEG CD feature it has. I also like the zoom feature it has to read small text in a...

I bought this DVD player at a ridiculously low price, lower than the one listed above and at first was very skeptical because I thought for sure the performace wasn't going to be comparibly great. After 8 months of use I can say that I am actually looking to get another one. What I like about it is that it's very simple and easy to use, throw out the manual and everything else and just hook up. It reads DVD's and CD's for MP3 use. I use it in my bedroom with my flatscreen and it caters to my needs of just watching a DVD here and there and not wanting to spend tons of money to view those movies. If you are looking for the same you will most likely be more than satisfied.

Here's some more detailed info:
*EASE OF USE: Again very easy, a child could even use this, there isn't much to it.

*PERFORMANCE: It's been working like clock-work so far. No problems with any aspects of its performance after 8 months.

*NAVIGATION: Easy slim remote makes it easy to navigate. As well the fact that it doesn't have a lot of functions/features makes it easier to navigate. Menu's very simplistic.

*LOOKS: Mine's in black, a little bulkier than your new almost-flat progressive scans. I own a COX decoder for the movie channels and it is the exact same size so I place it above. Don't buy it for the looks.

*CONS: If you're really into electronics and snazzy items and looks etc, DON'T BUY THIS. if you want a plain, simple, and reliable DVD player to play your movies on and in the end be happy with the performance and the fact that you paid so little, THIS IS FOR YOU! The other con obviously it's not progressive scan and for this price I wouldn't expect it to be. As mentioned I use it with a very high res flat screen and the picture is flawless, so I have no complaints. NO CONS really, just depends what you're after.

Apex may not be Sony but it has proven just as reliable for me. If you're like me and skeptical about the brand and the price, don't worry and buy with confidence!

I also like the zoom feature it has to read small text in a movie.

CONS: I don't like the remote control in some ways. To navigate through the DVD menu, you have to press the green "Shift" key to activate the navigational buttons. The player looks cheap and kind of fragile. The player will sometimes make a loud vibration noise when the disc rotates fast in the drive. The tray also makes a loud noise when you open and close it. It skips on some DVDs (not even scratched or warped) like my "Terminator 2: The Ultimate DVD" and "The Abyss." NOTE: I tried out these movies in my Playstation 2 console, no problemo reading the DVD inside.

My player has not broken yet after a year and five months of operation. Future shoppers, get a brand that is more reliable and well built if you want a DVD player that can last for many years like Sony or Panasonic. You will not be sorry. Good Luck!

I bought this unit about 2 years ago and it has still been working fine for me. The unit makes some noise while it's playing DVD's (a low buzz) which is kind of annoying but usually is drowned out by the movie playing anyway. It plays a multiple array of media types which I was impressed with considering it is a newer brand on the market and was super cheap. It is very simplistic and electronically would of course not compare to higher end DVD players like the ones built by sony etc. However, for longevity, price and satisfaction with its' performance, I give it four stars.

I own 3 APEX DVD players that I purchased from Amazon over the past 2 years and have nothing but good things to say about them. For what you spend, the quality and features are top notch.

It sounds like the other reviewers received bad units, I am sure Amazon will replace them and they will be happy.

the best DVD investment I have made. This is the first and most inexpensive player that I have bought, and it has outlasted a slew of high priced trash. The major plus is that it plays most dvds without sending copy protection to your recorder enabling you to make back-ups of those hard to replace out-of-print dvds.

1.0 out of 5 stars piece of crap, June 14, 2010
By
This review is from: Apex AD-1201 DVD Player (Electronics)
The thing was a piece of crap. I'd never buy anything APEX again. It is cheap for a reason, it is a piece of crap. It might be the cheapest player on the market but that is for a reason. They don't sell repair parts, it is a disposable player and of course it will break and then you just toss it. A belt breaks but APEX doesn't sell repair parts so you are screwed. Being a technician, that makes me angry at those cheap idiots. All they care about is the sale. Service after the sale is YOUR PROBLEM even though they manufactured it.

Don't even consider this manufacturer for anything! Go with something made in Japan or Korea. This trash is made in China from what I've read online even though the company is based here in California. They started out small, selling the most they could of the cheapest things they had. Hey a billion dollars is a lot of money even if it comes from the worst designed crap in the world. Like I said, all they care about is the sale. Quality, is just a word to them, a foreign word no doubt.

5.0 out of 5 stars The little engine that could....., December 10, 2006
This review is from: Apex AD-1201 DVD Player (Electronics)
I bought this at Christmas time 3 or 4 years ago (along with the Apex AD-1200)from Circut City for $25 a piece. Let me tell you, these are the most dependable DVD players I have. Nothing fancy or flashy, but I wasn't looking to pay for that. They blow away my expensive Panasonic players. I can not express how happy I am and will be looking into more Apex products!!!

cheap from wal-mart. problem... doesn't play DVD+R which sux. will only play my DVD-R. i think manufacturers should make this very clear somewhere in the description or packaging.

another problem is this thing hums real loud like a shaky internal motor or something. i fix the problem by inserting disc and then turning it on its side vertically upright. make sure you turn it back normal when ejecting (a dvd once fell into the player).

if you want a regular player for standard movies, this will play them. however, if you burn your own, make sure you get the right format blank DVD (DVD-R). 3 stars for good price...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad..,just not right for me, May 2, 2005

I've had my Apex 1201 for a few years and it's worked well, but we use it as our "spare" dvd player in the guest room. This DVD player will NOT play DVD+R discs, so I really have no use for it since most of my movies are on DVD+R. It plays DVD-R's and CDR's with no trouble.
This player is also very loud, so I wouldn't recommend it as your primary DVD player.

Are you in the need for an inexpensive DVD player? Apex is the one for you. I purchased mine for a low price, not expecting much. However, this player amazed me. For the price, it is a high-quality item, capable of playing DVDs, CDs, mp3s, and photo cds. While its looks may not be stylish, it offers a great performance for the price.
