With my two $40 government credits in hand, I drove to Best Buy to get a digital converter box. At $49.99 each, I only had to pay $9.99 each to get the product. I saved $80, but I still feel guilty - guilty that I wasted my family's hard-earned money and the government's money.

Good things about this converter:
- It makes an excellent paperweight.
- Its color matches nicely with my furniture.

Bad things about this converter:
- When on standby, it makes a quiet but high-pitched screeching noise that infants, children, and teenagers can hear. (For those who don't know, as you get older, you lose ability to hear high-pitched noises. While you're young, you can still hear them fine.)
- The remote controls stop working after a while. I have one remote that's completely dead and one remote that has a malfunctioning power button.
- It has no controls on the actual box, so if your pet snake eats your remote control, you can't change the channel anymore.
- Once every few days, it decides to freeze up the television broadcasting. Your program will randomly stop, and you have to turn the converter off and back on to resume reception.

Epic customer service story:

Day 1 - The remote controls are not working, so I call the warranty department to get a replacement. They say to mail the remote in to them along with a letter, and give me a return authorization (RA) number. I mail the package through USPS (United States postal service, better known as "snail mail").

Day 29 - I have not received my replacement remote control yet, so I call customer service to ask what's going on. They say to call back in one week in case the package has not been processed yet.

I purchased this item a few months ago and have been having problems for a couple of weeks. When I turn the unit on it usually does not turn on for several minutes up to several hours(I forgot it was on once when we left the house when I came home it still had not signal and my tv and box had been on the whole time we were gone). If the unit does turn on then I get a green screen which usually locks up at which point I have to unplug the unit to get it to turn off b/c the power button is useless at this point.

Prior to the unit breaking it still was not a great unit.
1. The tv guide doesn't always work.
2. Remote must be pointed directly at the box to get a response.
3. Unit gets extremely hot.
4. Universal codes are not available so you must have 2 remotes.
5. No buttons on the converter box to adjust channel

I called customer service today to try and get help, what a joke that was. I was told repeatedly how sorry they were but it would cost me $30 to get it fixed, plus shipping, b/c I did not have my sales receipt. Even if I did have my sales receipt it needed to be with in 90 days or else I still had to pay for the repairs. This is the worst warranty for an electronics item I have ever heard of and the people on the phone were not helpful at all. I was however given the option of faxing them a letter of complaint if I wanted but was basically told they would not help me.

I have owned one other Apex item and it is my estimation that everything they make is a complete piece of junk as the dvd player also broke soon after purchase.

Whatever you do don't waste your money on apex items!

After the DTV transition, this was the only box that Best Buy carried.

Took both of my coupons and gave it to the Best Buy guys. Only had to pay $5, because they docked the price from $50 to $45.
This product isn't bad, but it isn't too good either. It works like it's supposed to, which is the important thing. What people don't know about digital TV, is that DTV is capable of 720p/1080p HDTV. This box only has video outputs for RCA and S-Video(480p only.) Most DTV boxes only have RCA cables output anyway.

Your purchase includes:
-One Digital TV converter box
-One remote
-Two "AAA" Batteries
-Instruction Manual
-RCA cables

The converter box has coax output for video and coax input for the antenna. Along with that, you have a smart antenna input, which looks like a phone jack with the clip off-set. For video out, you have RCA and S-video.

Setup of the box is not difficult, you just need to use the right kind of TV antenna. I noticed that I could get more channels with my Hauppague 950Q USB TV stick, with my basic rabbit ears antenna in the same position. But I did get fairly good reception with this box and I was quite satisfied. The only thing that I am a little concerned about is that this box is that it gets a little hot while powered on.

All in all, I am satisfied. I'm not sure about the kinds of problems that other people are having, but it sounds like there was a large batch of defective units, and I guess I was the luck of the draw.

Like everyone else writes, this box is junk. Bought it from Best Buy as it was the only box they carry now (very puzzling given its terrible reviews and quality - BB must make huge margins on it). Straight out of the box, the remote skipped channels. You have to press the channel up/down buttons on the remote a number of times to try to catch the channel you want to watch as it often jumps two at a time. There are no buttons on the box, so if you misplace the remote, you cannot change channels. Finally, every time you want to try to add a channel, you have to re-scan, potentially losing other channels in the process. Unacceptable. Called Best Buy, and they will get a manager to check whether it qualifies as defective, and if I'm fortunate, they'll replace it with another Apex DT250A - lucky me!
