Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Get affordable high-resolution images on a standard 4:3 ratio screen with Apex's GB-5108 projection set. This 51-inch monster is ideal for DVD viewing, from its progressive-scan component-video inputs (for use with a compatible DVD player) to its four-line comb filter and velocity-scan modulation technology. A progressive-scan DVD player output, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at this set's picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. The GB-5108's 2D Y/C four-line comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

In the audio department, BBE sound simulates surround sound through two channels, either the set's or an external pair. When listening through external speakers, you can still control the volume right from the remote control after connecting the set's variable audio outputs to an amp or receiver. The set offers two component-video inputs (one for standard component-video, one for progressive-scan), two S-video inputs, one RF input (compatible with antennas and older VCRs), two rear AV inputs, and one set of front AV inputs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Value if the TV worked as designed, September 20, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Apex GB-5108 51-Inch Projection TV (Electronics)
Buyer beware if you intend to purchase.

Why? Simply...some problems with the TV I purchased.

1. The Clock failed to keep correct time, therefore the 'Timer' functional was useless.
2. The factory setting for the Convergence was way off, and therefore it requires the owner to converge the RGB lines. Not a big task, just time consuming. Nevertheless, once converged, excellent Picture quality and from DVD very nice. When I placed the TV in Standby mode for 1 - 2 hours, all the user settings were lost. So back to converging the screen again and again and again and storing the data/info but it constantly failed to keep the settings. My eyes were burnt from looking at the grid pattern. BTW the right side of the screen was next to impossible to converge had to suffer color distortion at the edge. I contacted the retailer and told them I had problems and they suggested that I contact the local 'service dealer'. I tried numerous times, but Apex customer support's phone line was always busy and could never get through. Apex's website was no help either in find the local service dealer contact info. Beginning to spot a trend here --- my opinion 'poor customer service'. In the end the retailer got the information for me. I contacted the local technicians to they had to order parts after consulting with Apex in CA. This took serveral days. After a week of waiting (definetly not 'over nighted') the technicans installed the parts, but it didn't resolve the problems! The technician confirmed with me that they had been in touch with Apex technical support and they were doing what was suggested. So, back to the drawing board, and back to Apex Tech. Support, the local service dealer had to take my TV into the shop. 2 weeks later, still no TV in my house, more parts (Again not 'over nighted')and technicians tell that the clock now runs fast +3 minutes gain in a 1.5 hour period. I guess it's better than a loss of time? Not!
The technican didn't confirm or deny with any certainy wether or the convergence is fixed. I got to test that out myself I suppose.

At the beginning of the problems I emailed Apex but it appears that the email was never received. Oh well.

Bottom line. The picture is great if your TV runs OK. Maybe I am the unfortunate one out of a thousand, or ten, or five --- whose's to know.

Advice, really check out the TV before buying. I rated the TV low because of the poor service I received. I always beieve problem can be resolved in a timely manner, but not apparently so in this case.

So I plan to return the TV to the retailer and tell him not to carry such promblematic TV which should help avoid customer frustrations in the future for them.

Live and learn eh? Hope you do better than I did.

1.0 out of 5 stars RUN, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING APEX, NO MATTER WHAT!!!, November 12, 2003

Do not buy this, or anything else. tv broke after 3 weeks of limited use.(maybe 1 or two sittings a WEEK) amazon wouldn't take it back, and Apex took a MONTH to find a repair center, i live in Baltimore MD, a major metropolitan area! The repair center has it, going on 3 THREE months, still not repaired. Apex says "oh, all we can do is repair it", but obviously they dont. They are a rip off, do not buy from them, the picture was bad and the quality is even worse. Apex is good for a gag gift at best. Buy it if you want, i warned you. Good Luck.

1.0 out of 5 stars buy at your own risk, November 13, 2003

This companies warrenty is worthless and their customer service department is a joke. Bought a big screen from them in june, it wouldn't recieve a signal took almost a month to get a service person to repair it (took all of 5 minutes when he got there). In October same problem occured it's mid november still no service person. Have probably spent a minimum of 40 hours on the phone with each instance trying to get the problem resolved. Lots of we'll call you back before the day is out or we will call you tomorrow that were never followed through. 800 number disconnects you after being on hold for 20 minutes.

Emails don't help, calls to the headquarters don't help. Asking to speak to management doesn't help.

If you can put up with that on a 1000$+ purchase, be my guest.
