Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Now you can enjoy a flicker-free progressive-scan video image on the go or in your home, even without a high-definition or HD-ready television. The Apex PD650 portable DVD player features a broad, 6.5-inch widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) LCD, whose large viewable area, progressive-scanning, and thin-film-resistor construction render smooth, vivid images.

The player also offers built-in stereo speakers for headphones-free listening and compatibility with DVD-Video, VCD/SVCD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3- and WMA-encoded discs, and JPEG and Kodak Picture CDs. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (through a .125-inch minijack-to-Toslink optical cable, not supplied) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Non-progressive-scanning S-video and composite-video outputs simplify hookup with your home TV. The composite-video and stereo analog audio outputs are switchable as inputs so you can use the PD650 as a monitor for a camcorder, VCR, or gaming console if you wish. Playback options include frame-by -frame slow motion, 2x and 4x zoom, and multiple-angle viewing (with applicable discs). Supplied accessories include an AC adapter, rechargeable battery, user's manual, and a remote control. Headphones are not included.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great deal for the price!, October 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Apex PD650 Progressive-Scan Portable DVD Player with 6.5" LCD Screen (Electronics)
Reading the few reviews here you would think this is a piece of junk. However, I purchased this unit for my wife based on over 100 reviews at another site that rated the unit very high for the price(4 out of 5 average rating).

This unit has a good size screen. The quality is comparable to all of the other units I checked including RCA & Panasonic. Apex throws in a lot of accessories too. AC adapter/cigarette lighter adapter/headphones/audio cables/etc. It is also NTSC/PAL switchable and the AC adapter internally switches 110/220.

The sound is adequate through the external speakers and was excellent through the headphones. My wife listened to two movies in the car today with no problems with auto/road noise. I also tried my LOTR DVD and was very pleased with the sound quality.

My main complaint is that the battery pack is large, but this is true of nearly every portable dvd player. Note: they only show you the unit in the pictures...the battery pack nearly always clips on the bottom. As for the "problem" with the widescreen not filling the entire screen on some movies...I believe this is a problem for every portable dvd player, not just APEX.

Overall, I am very happy with the quality for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice unit but several small problems., June 18, 2003

This review is from: Apex PD650 Progressive-Scan Portable DVD Player with 6.5" LCD Screen (Electronics)
Great features and a good price but several problems will require returning the unit. The disk cover opens while playing a movie causing a need to restart and find where you were. The processor occasionally locks up requiring removal of all power to reboot the system. The battery will go dead in less than 3 days if left connected to the (turned off) unit. The latch that holds the unit closed makes it very dificult to open. The audio amplifier is weak and would not be loud enough to hear on an airplane even using headphones so an external amplifier is needed. Hopefully these problems are just in my unit and replacement will solve the problems.

1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk, July 14, 2005
By
This review is from: Apex PD650 Progressive-Scan Portable DVD Player with 6.5" LCD Screen (Electronics)
Bought the unit from Circuit City. Plays all Discs as advertised. The cover is flimsy. The screen cannot be closed fully as the latch is useless. Cannot open the screen freely. Appears that screen is going to break. This happened only after watching few DVDs. The LCD became hot and deformed. Need a better design. Apex should not have put this product in market. This is a piece of junk.
