Usually Amazon has the best deals going. But believe it or not I just bought this tape measure at Lowes for $4.88. I also have a Stanley (metal case) which I've used countless times (dropped even more) and would never get rid of. This one is plastic but a solid plastic that feels good in your hand. The reason I bought it is you don't have to think about much, which comes in handy when your IQ is smaller the your shoe size. Say you measure something that is say 13 and 3/4 (top black numbers) and you need to know what the exact half measurement is. All you need to do is look at the red numbers below and it will tell you 6 and 7/8. The top part is broken down in black fractions 1/8 1/4 3/8 etc. Great tape measure which I guess is worth 4 times what I paid for it.

Let's start with the bad. The case feels cheap, so does the lock button and maybe even the belt clip. Now just because the case feels cheap, doesn't mean it will ever be an issue.

Moving to the good. The blade feels strong and well made. Of course this is the most important part of the tape. This is a specialty tape, the top reading is the actual length and the bottom reading (in red) is half of the actual length reading. This saves time when you're doing a lot of center measurements. On the other hand, you need to remember that the bottom numbers are only half of the actual length. So that's a chance to make a mistake or two.

Both scales on the tape are marked off in 1/32". Each 1/8" is clearly labeled. Standard 16" stud length has the number in white framed in a black rectangle. The foot marking is small and easy to miss if you don't pay attention. At first I didn't think you could do inside measurements to the back of the case, but I see that you can. (not sure how accurate it is due to the shape of the case though)

So, bottom line: is it worth 5 bucks plus tax? I think so.

I Install and repair automotive lifts. I love this tape measure. No need to do math to find the center of doors or bays or anything. Yes this tape does have the feet in very small print and is hard to read, however I always have two tape on hand this on and a "normal" tape. If I need a measurement in feet I grab the "normal" tape. All come down to having the right tool for the job. As far as the quality of this I am ruff with my tools and I have never broke on of these tapes I have 3 of them and had them for more then 3 years.

I wish all tape measurers were like this one. This Apex Self Center Tape is just what I needed. It feeds in and out with no kinks and the self center markers on it make hanging pictures, finding the center of anything you measure quick and easy. The casing is good quality plastic and I absolutely love it. I don't see this breaking anytime soon but if, for some reason, I end up needing a replacement I will be buying this again.

I wanted a self centering tape measure after seeing one my contractor was using. This one is also set with larger/bolder marks on the 16" for studs etc. The markings indicating 1 foot, 2 feet etc are very small and you have to look closely for them. I prefer a tape measure that shows the feet marked bold not the stud lines. Had to return it. The self centering marks were great though.

The feet aren't marked so that you can see them clearly. This makes this item extremely hard to use. I don't want to know how many inches long a couch is, I want to know how many feet long it is. Can't tell easily with this. I would not buy it again.

This is a tape measure, but one with a difference. When you measure something, it, of course shows you how long the item is. However, just below the measurement, it also shows you what the center measurement would be. This is EXTREMELY useful.

Think how frustrating it is to be centering a picture on a wall that's 75 inches long. You can calculate it, of course, but that's not very easy to do with confidence when you;re standing there with the tape stretched out and a pencil in your mouth. With this tape, you just look at the red number below the 75 inch indicator, and you can see that the midpoint on the wall is at 37 ½.

It saves a lot of frustration, and I recommend it most highly.
