Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Model 204 is a professional two channel audio processor, where each channel independently has an Aphex Aural Exciter® section and an Optical Big Bottom® section. The unit therefore may be operated on a stereo pair or as completely separate channels for use in mixdown sessions — or any other audio use only limited by your imagination.

The Model 204 DRAMATICALLY enhances live, recorded, broadcast and webcast sound. The patented Aural Exciter enhances detail, clarity and imaging. It has even been scientifically proven to increase intelligibility. It pulls a vocal or an instrument up out of a mix. It punches up an entire mix, even in a noisy or reverberant environment. The new Optical Big Bottom adds low-end punch with deeper, more powerful bass. This enhanced bass can be packed into your tracks without overloading the recorder and into your PA system without adding more amps or speakers.

You cannot achieve these improvements with any other processing regardless of price. There are many "enhancers" on the market, but none can match the effectiveness and musicality of the patented processes in the Model 204.

Features

  • Two independent low noise channels
  • Adjustable Tune, Harmonics, and Mix controls on the Aural Exciter section
  • Adjustable Drive Level, Tune, and Mix controls on the Big Bottom section
  • Switchable -10 dBv / +4 dBu operating level
  • Balanced 3-pin and 1/4" TRS Inputs and Outputs
  • Internal power supply

For Recording, Mixing and Mastering
The Aural Exciter restores the subtle nuances that are often damaged in the recording process. Its patented Transient Discriminate Harmonics Generator determines which parts of the signal need harmonic enhancement while other "enhancers" do not have this intelligence, making their effect much less musical. The effect creates more space around each element of the mix and greater overall dimensionality. Additionally, the Big Bottom gives more and deeper bass without overloading the recording medium. Also, record your stereo masters, CDs, and car tapes through the Model 204 - they will sound better no matter what the source or where you play them back, this even applies to heavily bit rate reduced audio sources such as MP3 files.

For Live Sound - Touring and PA Monitors, Fixed Installations, DJ Rigs
The Model 204 will improve the performance of just about any sound system. It will extend the apparent response at both ends of the spectrum and will increase the width and uniformity of high frequency dispersion. The " dead spots" are filled in without "hyping" the high end. The Big Bottom increases low frequency density - greater loudness with no increase in peaks. This process, unlike multiband compression, does not change the impact of the bass. All this without adding more amps or speakers!

For Broadcasting and Webcasting
Broadcasting and webcasting have limited frequency response and dynamic range. The Aural Exciter and Big Bottom extend high and low frequencies without eating up headroom or causing more limiter action. Broadcasts are louder and more present. Webcasts are cleaner and more natural sounding. The effects are noticeable even on tiny computer speakers.

For Musical Instrument Amplification
The Model 204 improves the detail and articulation of your amplified instrument. The Aural Exciter extends the highs by restoring the natural overtones that are often lost in miking and amplification. Big Bottom extends the lows for bass instruments. These enhancements can help you punch through in a noisy or reverberant room and make your current rig ‘big enough’ for much larger rooms.

Product Description

The new Aphex Aural Exciter Model 204 offers separate processors to enhance both ends of the dynamic spectrum. The Aural Exciter circuit disperses high frequencies much more evenly than traditional equalization allowing those frequencies to "cut through" and fill dead zones without needing to significantly boost the overall output level. Vocals and instruments seem to stand out, without raising individual volumes in the mix. Big Bottom circuitry dynamically shapes the bass response in the 20Hz to 120Hz range. The bass response is dynamically optimized to isolate and enhance the lowest frequencies and provide a deeper, more resonant bass without overloading the sound system. Using the patented Big Bottom tightens the bass, allowing individual notes to be more articulated and recognizable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real beauty, April 27, 2006
This review is from: Aphex 204 Aural Exciter
With the right eq you can push the bass drum to the limit, make vocals very real, guitars sound boomy and scary bassy sound without losing the crunchy sound. A real beauty. The only thing is that since it dosent have digital outs or ins can get a little "hissy"

5.0 out of 5 stars The magic box!, April 9, 2011
This review is from: Aphex 204 Aural Exciter
I've owned this product for about 2 years now and all I can say is WOW what a difference this unit makes in your overall sound. I'm not sure what the reviewer was talking about who said that it added a lot of noise to the signal. He must have had a bad unit as mine you can't even tell that it's on when it's bypassedor when it's engaged and the settings all turned down.

I use this as my final "magic box" when using with my live setup. It's the last in my chain before going to my QSC powered speakers and they bring the entire mix to life. My Aphex brings out all the detail in the high end, and adds a nice bottom end to the sound without making it sound boomy at all. If I had to replace this unit because of theft/fire or whatever else happens in life, I would happily pay twice the price if that is what they asked for.

I can't say enough good things about this product and now am seriously looking at the new Aphex "channel" specifically for my lead singer that can sound somewhat "thin" at times.

I love my Aphex!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not all it's cracked up to be., May 10, 2008
This review is from: Aphex 204 Aural Exciter
I have owned this for a year, and it contributes more electronic noise than anything else in my entire signal chain..even more than my guitar amp! What electronic junk..

They must have made their reputation on a lot better piece of gear than this, because if you have a decent sound in the first place, this will be a *huge* disappointment to you.

This is the first piece of gear that you could throw overboard, and never miss it..ever. After an entire year, I still cannot say that this cheesey box has contributed anything at all to my music production..money better spend on something that actually delivers.

I learned this one the hard way..when the product website doesn't have any samples of the before and after sound, then you can be sure that the company is wanting you to buy the story, not the sound.. If it actually sounded good, they would let you have a listen. What a total waste of time and money.
