Probably The Best ND Album To Date,
By

This review is from: Aphotic (MP3 Download)
Disclaimer: I haven't spent too much time with this album yet, but my first impression is positive.
Based on the short time I've had to listen to Aphotic, I can safely say it's probably the strongest Novembers Doom album yet. The first track, "The Dark Host," starts with a mournful violin intro and slams directly into gear reminiscent of "Rain" from The Novella Reservoir. The journey then only gets better with some of Paul's best clean vocals of all time, into fantastic blast beats later in the song. The next song, "Harvest Scythe," continues the onslaught nicely. But what Novembers Doom album would be complete without it's more calming doom moments? "What Could Have Been" is an excellent and rather emotional track featuring ex-The Gathering vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen in a terrific vocal tandem with Paul. These are the songs that have stuck out most so far, but "Shadow Play" also sounds very good after a few listens. Again, I definitely have to listen to this album a few more times through to get the grasp of it all, but so far I'm far more impressed with this effort than I was with The Novella Reservoir, and that's saying something. And yes, this album crushes Into Night's Requiem Infernal handily. I highly recommend this album to any fan of Novembers Doom, and any fan looking to enter the doom genre. This is a good place to start.

I just finished listening to this album, and I have to say it is probably the best November's Doom album to date. The album features guest appearances by vocalist Anneke Van Giersbergen on the haunting "What Could Have Been" and world-renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine on "What Could Have Been" and "The Dark Host". If you like the very heavy dark/doom metal get this album!

I just started to listening to this band soon after the disappointing new Morbid Angel CD trying to find a fix I needed. I came across this band and gotta
say one of my favorites. Mix of two styles of music to me. Doom and Death, with his vocals understandable.
