4.0 out of 5 stars proceed with caution
I enjoyed this book but would like to give a warning. I tried taking the niacin for the body flush described in this book. It was NOT an arousing experience. I felt like my body was burning up and I looked like I had a severe sunburn for about 20 minutes. Once this passed I was extremely cold from all of the heat my body had released. I may just be extra sensitive,...

1.0 out of 5 stars Take it from an MD: this is scientific nonsense
When people become sexually aroused, they exhibit certain physiological signs such as flushing, increased heart rate, and sweating. Some people who were--oh, how can I phrase this nicely?--not at the top of their class have speculated that artificially increasing one or more of these INDICES of arousal will somehow increase arousal and satisfaction. Ridiculous! When you...

Ridiculous! When you drive your car its speedometer needle moves, but if you push the speedometer needle with your finger it won't budge your car one inch. That's obvious, correct? Well, this author evidently has little conception of logic and physiology, because he thinks that using niacin (one of the B-vitamins) to induce a flush can increase sexual pleasure. Wrong. If anything, taking niacin will just make you itchy and prickly for a few hours. Is that conducive to sex?

5.0 out of 5 stars both titillating and informative, August 27, 1998

Choueke has created the perfect combination of both stories and chemical information that will really put you in the mood. The book is a series of vignettes that promises to stimulate you cerebrally and physiologically to enjoy new experiences and revive old ones with your mate. Great information. If you liked My Secret Garden, you will love this book.

None of the books on the subjects really explains what goes on between drugs/herbs and sex. Few authors understand the different biological mechanisms involved and how they differ between the genders.

This one is no exception. On the plus side, it reads well and has interesting stories that sometimes verge into soft porn. The major choices are discussed and there seems to be some field experience shared.

Are aphrodisiacs to be used to restore missing aspects of an individual's sexual behavior or can they be used to enhance functions that work OK as-is? There is a difference but it is not explored or explained here. For example - daminana. It is a mild intoxicant, somewhat like very weak marijuana, but that's not the basis for it's reputation. Instead, it is considered an aphrodisiac because of its effects on the genitals and how it "heats" them. For women, it enhances lubrication - usually.

Still, one of the better introductions to the subject and recommended as a first choice for those exploring the subject, especially if one has little interest in the biology involved. Still, the best book is "The Alchemy of Sex and Desire."
