4.0 out of 5 stars A DEADLY, GORGEOUS ASSASSIN, October 10, 2005
This review is from: Aphrodite IX (Paperback)
Normally, Aphrodite IX is the kind of book that I would rip to shreds. The main character is a gorgeous, scantily clad female. Not that I have anything against gorgeous, scantily clad females, but when a book features dozens of splash pages, many of them two-page splash pages, it's usually a sign that the book is all glitz and eye-candy and lacking any story. But a funny thing happened as I read this trade paperback collecting issues #1 - 4 of the series...I liked it. I really liked it! (with apologies to Sally Field).

In a futuristic society where nearly all humans have some synthetic parts of some kind, Aphrodite is unique. She is totally synthetic and was created in a lab. Only she doesn't know it. Created to be an ultra powerful assassin and to carry out the whims of the head of the Council, Aphrodite kills without remorse or feeling and does so brazenly and with incredible efficiency. And, 15 minutes after her missions, she completely forgets them, retaining no memory of what she did or even what she is. Her first hints come when she leaves herself a recording, prior to forgetting. Then, she slowly begins to remember things in her dreams. She remembers the people she's killed and she remembers the Council and the man she affectionately called "daddy" the scientist who created her.

The more she remembers the more of a conscience she develops over her actions. Aphrodite, the unstoppable assassin, fighting off security forces and a powerful cyborg named Abraxis, begins to piece together the clues of her mysterious life and finally comes face-to-face with the head of the council and learns all the secrets of her deadly past.

Writer David Wohl borrows some themes from films and TV such as "The Matrix", "The 6th day" and "Dark Angel" and comes up with an effective, if not altogether, original story. I did find myself engrossed in Aphrodite's search for her background and the reason why she forgets her missions 15 minutes after completion. Dave Finch's artwork is simply striking. Yes there are a lot of splash pages but it is great stuff. He shows Aphrodite as the perfect, sexy, yet vulnerable and confused and manipulated killer that she is. The trade paperback also reprints all of the variant covers that were included in the regular comic series and a brief sketch gallery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aphrodite IX, April 15, 2008
This review is from: Aphrodite IX (Paperback)
The comics is well drawn and the story has its catches, but sometimes I just got lost because I didn't knew where I was. Why wasn't Aphrodite with Burch? Why was she in a new mission? When did this happen? It was a little like time-travelling, jumping through the story, until you catch the ride and wave it and then it all flows gracefully until the last page that leaves you in awe and wanting to know more. Is there more?

The bad part of it is that I think that some of the characters need a bit more of development. I suppose that if it's not a short serie and it gets on the characters may have (or may not have) some more depth. Especially the secondary characters. Also, I would like to know why Aphrodite decided to leave herself a tape to enlighten her about the fact that she loses her memory after every mission. And why Burtch did what he did? All of it?

I don't know, I liked the comic book, but I think it lakes a little more of development on the characters department, and maybe a little more elaboration in the overall sense (continuity of the story).

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the art! Interesting Story arc!, August 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Aphrodite IX (Paperback)
If you're a big fan of Heavy Metal Magazine, Sci-fi, Fantasy etc. you'll love this book. David finch art is great, you can see references from Blade Runner, Star Trek, even a little bit of Aliens and Star Wars, and Aphrodite is really, really hot so the art deserves a big ten. The story is you're basic origin of the character arc, but leaves you wanting more, still entertaining though.
I would buy this more for it's art and concept, but i need to see a better Aphrodite IX story that'll blow my mind.
Buy it, it's worth your money, and IX is freaking hot!!!
