Great intro to the Broun Fellinis- this cd is more mellodic and easily accessible than later recordings (although they are so so excellent too, especially "Real Moments") Also, there are some tracks with vocals on them that are a real treat--"zoomin'" is a little goofy, but the rest are inspired and you'll dig it.
And if you ever get a chance to see them live, DO NOT MISS IT! They will blow your mind if you're paying attention.

In 1991 when I first booked the Broun Fellini's to play a gig they were almost unknown. 6 months later they were on the top of a rising re-surgence of jazz in the San Francisco Bay Area. They were always kind enough to come and play my shows even as their popularity grew and my relative obscurity became a financial burden. In 1992 they openned my show for Ronny Jordan. Jordan was on his first tour in the U.S. and relatively unknown here at the time. I have to say he didn't begin to compare.
The Broun Fellini's out lasted almost all of their contemporaries in the SF Jazz scene, and even out lasted the SF Jazz resurgence. But the true joy of the Broun Fellini's came from watching them perform, because it was never just the Broun Fellini's. The Broun Fellini's are an experience. I have never seen 3 musicians integrate more perfectly with any number of rappers, poets, DJ's. Their ability to integrate disparate artists and art forms in the middle of a maelstrom of intensely powerful original jazz compositions has always been what makes the Fellini's a name worth knowing.
The Crack Emcee was a frequent collaborator (featured here on POW), and there is no stronger voice in the rap community anywhere. Crack's style and voice blended perfectly with the Fellini's sound and he was almost a constant guest for at the Elbo room sessions for over 2 years. But no band is any better than its foundation, and I would have to say there are few drummers that I have ever seen that compare to Beatnigs veteran Kevin.
