5.0 out of 5 stars Oh....I loved it!
I was such a fan of Spin Cycle, that I was so excited to see this new novel.
I was not dissapointed at all! This book was hillarious! It was a little slow in the first few pages, but you will find yourself laughing and smiling until the last page.

I will rate it along with two of my favorite reads "Confession of a Shopaholic" and "The Autobiograpy of...

3.0 out of 5 stars cute and oddly entertaining
This book was entertaining... it was light, fun and very easy to get through. As chic-lit goes, it won't be at the top of my list but nonetheless it's okay by me. I liked the characters, but I thought it odd that Max would tell her the lie about the "goddaugther", the reason for it didn't really grab me..that was a bit far fetched. Still it's fun.. pick it up and see what...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun, Light Read!!, November 9, 2004
This review is from: Apocalipstick (Paperback)
This was a fun and rather fresh addition to the genre of "Chick Lit" that I highly recommend if you are looking for a fast read that will have the reader laughing out loud, and playing arm chair investigator along side our funny but ditzy heroine Rebecca Fine.

Rebecca Fine is a journalist and she is looking for that one article that will shoot her off into journalism stardom. Problem is, she writes a beauty column and there just really isn't a huge chance of there being some dangerous and dastardly plot revolving around lip liner or lip-gloss. On top of that she has just found out that her father has a new love interest that just so happens to have been her childhood nemesis "Lipstick" and said love interest is now (temporarily anyhow) going to be her roommate. Oh, and yes and she just so happens to be embarking on a new relationship with Max Stoddart who has it all, looks, talent, and he just so happens to be working on a story that could make his total career. Everything is going great in the romance department but the rest of her life has gone into the rubbish bin, or at least she thinks so until she gets a huge break with a possible scandal in the cosmetic industry that will lead her straight to Paris, and perhaps the Pulitzer...okay maybe that's asking too much, but still she now has a chance to prove that she does have what it takes to be great. Now if she could only smooth out the bumps of her relationship with Max. It looks like she has competition from another source, and Becks doesn't know exactly what to do now? Should she trust him, or walk away and hope for better later?

This was a fun story with great charismatic characters. Becks is a times a little loopy and doesn't think things fully through before acting, but then again that's human nature at times. Thankfully this is not a re-occurring theme with her behavior throughout the story. The relationship between Max and Rebecca is fun entertaining, but does not take front and center as far as the storyline goes. In actuality there are several different sub-plots working at the same time with quite an eclectic cast of secondary characters, which keep this story from slowing down. The ending is fun with a satisfying conclusion for a storylines introduced. This is the first time I've ever read Ms. Margolis and it honestly won't be the last. For a fun light read I highly recommend this author.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a waste of 12 bucks!, October 18, 2003

This review is from: Apocalipstick (Paperback)
I have never written a review but I felt that I had to save someone else from wasting their money on this book as I did. ... ... Reading this book made me realize I have been wasting my time "not" writing that book I've always wanted to write. If this is the standard that publishers are looking for then I am confident I can surpass it.

Some reasons why this book bugged me.

1)It was predictable. 2)I hated the way she tucked all the action and dialogue in these passsive narrative sentences. All the good stuff was summed up in two or three sentences and all these inane insignificant details were expanded upon beyond belief. 3)The sex starved best friend and father dating old highschool rival sub plot was boring and unrealistic. 4)Rebbecca was a terrible role model. She made a big deal out small issues-having to a wear a tacky outfit to a nice restaurant in Paris- and the big issues-like the fact that her boyfriend lied to about having a child-didn't seem to be that much of a concern to her. Heed my warning people, even if you see Apocalipstick in a sale bin for $.99...buy yourself a coffee instead. It will leave a better taste in your mouth.

2.0 out of 5 stars surprisingly not that great..., September 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Apocalipstick (Paperback)
i love these girly books, i admit it. however, this one isn't worth it. it's predictable (every time something "bad" happens, it turns out to be a 3's company-esque misunderstanding that you can see coming a mile away) and boring. also, i know this may sound ridiculous, but for young professional women like me who love to indulge in this kind of mindless reading, the bright pink cover and ridiculous title left me too embarrassed to read the book on the subway or even keep it near the top of my bag.

3.0 out of 5 stars Same story, different title!, July 24, 2003
This review is from: Apocalipstick (Paperback)
Well, I have now read all three of Sue Margolis' books - I really enjoyed Neurotica, but Spin Cycle and now Apocalipstick are just so-so. This one felt so similiar to the other two - the main character, spunky single woman, either has a sexually dysfunctional partner, or KNOWS someone with a sexually dysfunctional partner. She has some predictable flings (I almost laughed when they broke out the oil yet again during one of their "intimate moments". Oil was rubbed into her buttocks in each of the other two books. Hmmmm, must be an English thing, I guess). It was also odd that everytime someone cried in this book it was "a single tear rolled down her cheek" - I kid you not, this happened EVERY time! This book just felt like it was being churned out and not written; it wasn't very original.

4.0 out of 5 stars Apocalipstick, June 25, 2005
This review is from: Apocalipstick (Paperback)
Sue Margolis has yet to disappoint! I absolutely love her writing style, and after reading `Spin Cycle' & `Breakfast at Stephanie's', I had to seek out some more novels from this entertaining author. APOCALIPSTICK is riotous, witty, and impulsive.

When beauty columnist Rebecca Fine meets her extremely handsome new coworker, Max Stoddart, she is almost certain that he is the playboy-heartbreaker type. Nevertheless she gives him a chance and finds that he is well worth it. But he has a major secret that he is keeping from her.

Adding more excitement to her life, Rebecca's old H.S. bully, Lipstick has now come back as the fiancé of her 60-something year old dad, and around the same time, she receives a tip on an anti-wrinkle cream that could rock the beauty world bringing in lots of controversy.
There is so much going on in her life, who knows if she can take it all in at once.
Get ready for juicy secrets and unexpected twists and bumps... this is a definite must-read!

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 Stars is Generous, August 19, 2003
This review is from: Apocalipstick (Paperback)
This was my first Sue Margolis book, and I must say, I was somewhat disappointed. The plot was predictable and the characters seemed more like charicatures. The book was funny in places, but the humorous spots were few and far between. I just couldn't relate to the protagonist, Rebecca, at all. The sex scenes, while raunchy, were sort of ho-hum for me - too predictable. The chick lit genre is tired and chiched and is in desperate need of fresh, innovative writing and characters. And this novel just doesn't provide.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Margolis' Best, April 26, 2003

After reading Spin Cycle, I was eager to read Apocalipstick. There are some similarities with the two novels such as the author's excellent portrayal of her characters, semi-graphic sex scenarios, and predictable ending. If you're a big fan of the recent 'chick-lit' craze, you'll like this book. It's a fast read, perfect for plane travel or a beach trip.

4.0 out of 5 stars So-so, predictable plot, March 24, 2003
By
Janice (Arlington, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Apocalipstick (Paperback)
Sue Margolis's "Apocalipstick" deals with Rebecca, a beauty columnist whose ambition is to become an investigative reporter. Her chance came where she was approached by a former staff of one of the biggest cosmetic company who told Rebecca about an anti-wrinkle cream which contains illegal chemicals which would cause its users to "tell the truth." At the same time, Rebecca is dating Max, who works with Rebecca for the same magazine. Also in the picture are Rebecca's best friend, Jess who was having problems with her husband's lack of sexual interest, and Lipstick, who was her high school friend and now going to be her stepmother.

The plot is very predictable and you can sort of guess what is going to happen very early in the book. It is one of those books that is not very memorable and the characters could be develop more. However, it is still somewhat entertaining, especially dealing with Rebecca's friends, Jess and Lipstick. This two characters provide some humorous scenes. I wouldn't specifically recommend this book especially since there are so many other better ones out there. If you are a big Sue Margolis fan, this is still somewhat entertaining but just don't expect too much.
