Book Description

A Maine city has turned into a killing ground.
Is it a serial killer, someone with a penchant for the macabre and a need to destroy?

Or is it a darker force, an ancient legend from a mysterious Island come ashore to wreak havoc upon the unsuspecting?

Amid the backdrop of Portland’s burgeoning night scene, Police Lieutenant Rick Jennings discovers that no one is safe, and that evil has many faces.

Extended Description:

Danny Wolf, a gifted musician with alcohol problems is witnessing brutal murder in his dreams. Someone is carving a cross on each of the young female victims before crucifying them.

Newly released from prison for a crime he did not commit, Wolf is having trouble adjusting to civilian life. He believes the dreams are a symptom of his adjustment until he discovers that they are real and that the victims are his own groupies. He soon begins to doubt his sanity. Could he be a homicidal madman?

Wolf has no memory of his early childhood but discovers that he spent his first eight years in a Catholic orphanage on a mysterious island off the coast of Maine. Is it possible that his early life and the murders are somehow connected?

Soon the killings become more bold and gruesome, as members of the church begin to die.

Enter Police Lieutenant Rick Jennings and his young assistant Laura Higgins. They discover a government conspiracy involving the Catholic Church, and a cold war CIA mind control program known as MK-Ultra where children were used as test subjects.

Danny Wolf becomes the number one suspect in the murders, but no one, not even Wolf, is prepared for what they discover on Apocalypse Island, a mind blowing secret that was supposed to stay hidden forever.

Apocalypse Island is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you guessing until the shocking conclusion.

Soul Thief, book two of the Blue Light Series is out now.

Review

"Apocalypse Island is a major achievement. Hall's writing is excellent, riveting! The story morphs from the supernatural, to a crime story to science-fiction, to an espionage thriller exposing real historical facts of the dirty deeds committed by the CIA. How the good guys and the bad guys keep changing roles makes it even more fascinating. Most compelling is the depth of character portrayed in the tormented victim/hero Danny Wolf who is searching for his identity. I was fascinated by how Hall tackled so many subjects and tied them all together at the end . . . and then, unexpectedly, I fell in love with the 'Blue Light.'  It seemed to have human or super-human qualities and I did not want it destroyed . . . A must read!  I could not put this book down." --Kiana Davenport, internationally bestselling author of SHARK DIALOGUES, and THE SPY LOVER

"Apocalypse Island is an ambitious thriller, written by the talented Mark Edward Hall . . . Part political thriller, part police procedural, part supernatural gothic horror and part action-adventure, all rolled into one fast-moving book . . . You simply cannot put it down." --New York Times Bestselling Author, Allan Leverone

"Hall has an uncanny knack for blending vivid, almost poetic prose with visceral images of jaw-dropping horror to great effect." --Bram Stoker Award Winning Editor, Vince Liaguno

"Poetic and eerily seductive, Hall pushes you to the edge, until you get lost in the beautiful madness of his creations." --Midwest Book Review

"Hall is rapidly climbing the ladder to stake a claim as one of the dark fiction elite." --Morpheus Tales

5.0 out of 5 stars An explosive supernatural thriller February 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Strange things are happening to Danny Wolf. Imprisoned for a murder he claims he did not commit, Danny is tormented nightly by horrifying dreams; nightmares filled with death and destruction and chaos. Bizarre fugues torment him, during which time he becomes violent and uncontrollable, remembering nothing afterward.

Offered an opportunity for early release from prison subject to intensive psychological counseling, Danny eagerly accepts. But the minute he hits the streets of Portland, Maine, a series of ritualistic murders begin occurring. The common thread? Each of the victims is a young female; all have slept with Danny Wolf.

The nightmares intensify and Danny begins to doubt his own sanity. Perhaps he really is a homicidal madman. When young female detective Laura Higgins is assigned to the case, with instructions to get close to Danny in order to gather evidence, things begin to spiral out of control, leading to a shocking conclusion in a secret underground lab, far beneath a small island with a horrifying history off the rocky Maine coast.

APOCALYPSE ISLAND is an ambitious thriller, written by the talented Mark Edward Hall, an author I discovered about a year ago. It's a novel not easily pigeonholed: Part political thriller, part police procedural, part supernatural gothic horror and part action-adventure, all rolled into one fast-moving book. There are rogue CIA operatives, dirty cops, ghosts, corrupt church officials and double-crossing colleagues.

But at its heart, APOCALYPSE ISLAND is a tale of one man's desperate attempt to find his identity, when his history is a complete blank and his motives - and even his sanity - are called into question by all, including himself. The tension builds slowly but steadily, until by the end of this explosive book, you simply cannot put it down.

Simply put, APOCALYPSE ISLAND is a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a rollercoaster ride! August 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Danny Wolf was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, but offered early parole if he agreed to psychological counseling. The nightmares he experienced in prison intensified upon his release, making him question his own sanity. When he becomes the main suspect in a string of ritualistic murders in the area he also begins to doubt his innocence. As he and the authorities try to unravel the mystery, they become embroiled in a huge government conspiracy, where no one is innocent.

Twists and turns abound in this supernatural thriller. It will definitely hold your interest and keep you turning pages to find out how the heck it's all going to resolve. Mr. Hall has done an excellent job developing the characters and setting scenes while building the tension. The story is well-crafted and the writing is crisp and very unique. Part thriller, part mystery, part horror, part supernatural, and totally riveting! Fabulous job, Mr. Hall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different in a good way... February 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Apocalypse Island is rather hard to define but, no matter, as it is very entertaining and excellently written. In addition, the book is well-edited and formatted which was a huge plus for me.

There are many characters involved - some good, some bad, some ugly - but my favorite was Eli. Couldn't help but love that little guy.

If you like thrillers with a supernatural twist, you should enjoy Apocalypse Island. Kudos to the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Island is immobilizing! January 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Review on: Apocalypse Island
Author: Mark Edward Hall
Editor: S. Ramsay Hall
Cover Art and Trailer: Cyrus Wraith

What lurks in the shadows of Apocalypse Island is bound to have you unravelling and guessing till its end...

The 800 pages of this psychological type horror are so enticingly worded, that one tends to get a form of education from Mr Hall. Whilst learning of the perils as they surpass our once young Danny Wolf, seemingly caught in the wrong place at a judgemental time. Set by whom?

Then there's the ghost of Siri. Is she indeed a ghost or a figment of Danny's past thoughts and regrets? Perhaps that's something you can decide, before the conclusion.

Will the screaming at night ever cease, or the bloody array of the night's fallen victims... Luckily or not, a Lieutenant and his Detective are on the case, to pave a path to Wolf's mentally tortured freedom.

Now here's a warning: Do not commence reading Apocalypse Island at your designated bedtime, if you're susceptible to nightmares. Mr Hall's chilling prologue is so mentally descriptive, that it actually resulted in me myself, waking with thoughts and sensations likened to his first victim. That alone has got to be some kinda thriller!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Solid Thriller January 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I got this book, it was a free download. I'm not sure how long this will continue, but I'll say this...it's worth paying for.

Genre-wise, the book is hard to define. Thriller and Crime with horror and SF elements may be most accurate. Fair or not, I'm always a little suspicious about 4-5 star glowing reviews on a free download of an author I've never heard of before, but I'm glad I took the plunge.

From the first page, my attention was captured. The book is graphic, yet compelling and definitely has an edge to it. Danny Wolf is a character who just lives and breathes on the (virtual) page. Tortured as he is, he's utterly compelling.

The book did fall down just a touch for me in the end (hence the four rather than five stars). It was still a solid and satisfying ending, but there's a lot of info dump - one of those moments when the villain (or villains) uses the moment to hold forth about everything that happened and why it happened. The author's skillful storytelling falters just a bit. In addition, the flawless editing suffers a few hiccups starting in Chapter 122. I think the author and his editor (his wife) lost just a little steam coming into the home stretch.

That being said, the book packs a satisfying wallop. I've already recommended it to friends and family and can see myself re-reading it in the future!
