Book Description

Alex Keener has lived all of his sixteen years underground in U.S. Bunker 108. When he goes on his first recon into the Wasteland, he will find out exactly why.

Outside, Alex discovers a harsh landscape twisted by the impact of the meteor Ragnarok in 2030. Besides raiders, dust storms, and cold, a new threat is evolving -- the xenovirus, which twists men and animals into deadly monsters.

When the xenovirus invades Bunker 108, Alex must fight for survival. Joined by a beautiful ex-raider and idealistic scientist, Alex discovers that he and his friends might be the only ones standing between the world and a second apocalypse.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good start to a promising series June 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just finished Apocalypse: The Wasteland Chronicles Book 1. Many familiar themes of post-apocalyptic fiction are present here, but the author succeeds in weaving them together in an interesting fashion -- enough to look forward to the second book and find out what's in the Black Files and whether the xenovirus can be stopped.

Unlike some reviewers, I don't consider this a horribly edited book. I've seen far worse on Amazon. But I suggest one more read-through to correct grammatical and punctuation errors. Other than that, well done.

1.0 out of 5 stars written by 16 year old? October 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I understand the story is from the eyes of a 16 year old boy, but I think it was written by a teen as well. Early on I picked out a few grammatical errors, and shrugged it off as being poorly edited, however, as I read on, the story became obviously sophomoric. I could not finish reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beginning! January 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Hopefully this first review is a sign of interesting things to come for the year. This novella, an original ebook of 40,000+ words, is the start of an interesting sojourn across an apocalyptic world. We seem to have plenty of those types of books out there these days, but this one is special to me because it's written by one of my students.

Kyle West does a really good job of setting up an open-ended road trip adventure series that he spins with some interesting variations on a theme. I like his character a lot because Alex Keener is an innocent, he's seeing this savage world close up and personal for the first time, and he's not sure if he's match for the things he's going to find out in it after he's chased from the secret bunker where he's lived all of his sixteen years.

The first-person narration really works for this story and delivers a lot of emotional impact. Readers need to see Alex's outer and inner journeys to get the full scope of the world. Only a small part of that world is shown to us in this book. The purple ooze reminds me of the video game Left 4 Dead with the explosive attackers, and there's a definite zombie riff going on throughout the pages.

There's also a bit of X-Files in here too when Alex decides they have to find the mysterious Black Files that might have more information on the xenobiological agent that spreads the purple contagion. Since a meteor struck Earth and killed most life on the planet, I have to wonder if there were any aliens or alien creatures or alien viruses that hopped along for the ride.

See? Kyle has me wondering, and that's what a good writer does to the reader. Getting a good character is nice, getting an action-filled plot is another bonus, but when I start playing guessing games, matching up against the author, I know I'm hooked.

I can't wait to see the next volume. Until then, I'm going to be wondering what's going to happen next.

1.0 out of 5 stars another amazon thief September 27, 2013

Why do many authors think we as readers are going to spend our money to buy 3 books which should have all been in one. This story had such great potential but I refuse to pay over and over again

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother March 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I have multiple reasons for giving such a poor rating.

1. This is the most poorly edited book I have ever seen in "print'. There seems to have been no consideration of grammar or correct spelling. The errors are too numerous to list.

2. The initial concept is interesting, but poorly developed. This material is a barely fleshed out outline.

3. Character development is so lacking that I could not have cared less if they lived or died.

Update: I believe that this book should clearly be listed for a young adult audience. The author has stated that he uploaded a revised, additionally edited version. Perhaps the new version will be a better read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ouch...painful September 27, 2013

This had both poor writing and a totally hacks plot filled with monsters with purple slime for blood, etc. It seems to have been written by a 15 year-old boy.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money August 16, 2013

After 50 pages I put the book down. It is so poorly written with such a remote premise that I wouldn't even donate this book to the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Post Apocalypse Story January 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I've played plenty of wasteland survival games such as Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas and other games like them. When I started to read this book a few hours ago I discovered that it met all of my expectations and even went far beyond what I thought I would get out of reading this book. I absolutely loved and enjoyed this book and will definitely be recommending this book and the author to all of my friends. I can't wait to read the next one in the series, great job on the book and keep up the good work! :)
