About the Director

Global Science Productions was formed in 1990 by Dr. Elliott H. Haimoff. Dr. Haimoff is a world-renowned tropical biologist and animal behaviorist, who pioneered the use of videotaping and video production in the analysis of animal behavior back in 1976. Dr. Haimoff received his Ph.D. in Biology from Cambridge University, and went on to become a research professor in Biology at U.C.L.A., continuing his pioneering research in both video production and developing computer programs for biological analyses. Dr. Haimoff s work on animal behavior became the subject of a P.B.S. science television program in mid-1988. In addition, Dr. Haimoff served as the host and narrator for a one-hour program on understanding feline behavior, as well as appearing in several science news segments. Dr. Haimoff's TV production work began in late-1988, when he joined the science unit of the Los Angeles P.B.S. station, KCET, where he and his colleagues produced literally dozens of science programs examining everything from why cats purr to the science of sports medicine; from the last picture show of the Voyager space craft, to the science of art; from ancient Chinese astronomy to the latest in laser surgery; and from the physiology of obesity, exercise, metabolism and weight loss, to future colonization on Mars. After forming GLOBAL SCIENCE PRODUCTIONS in 1990, Dr. Haimoff and his staff have produced over 200 documentaries that spanned the spectrum of science, from the beginnings of the universe at the Big Bang, to profiles of the U.S. and Russian space programs in the old halcyon days of the space race to the moon, and even to what humankind might look like in the next million years.

Product Description

It was Christmas time, 1968, when humankind first broke their bonds to the Earth. Frank Borman and his crew guided their Apollo spacecraft across nearly a quarter-million miles of black void into orbit around the Moon, and back once more to a perfect pinpoint landing back on the Earth. This one-hour TV documentary special aired over PBS, and differs from all other Apollo 8 documentaries by the personal interviews with the astronauts and many of the top NASA officials who were a part of this historic project.

4.0 out of 5 stars Apollo 8: Christmas at the Moon December 24, 2008
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I just viewed this program on our local PBS station, and it was phenomenal. The 40th anniversary broadcast on the eve of Christmas took me back to the days of turmoil of 1968 and the huge pride of accomplishment it gave the USA in the final days of the year. The program includes interviews from the retired astronauts and other prominent people involved with the mission. I was stunned to learn that a lot of the mission staff average age was 25. The multiple angle camera shots of the liftoff are especially moving with the earth shaking roar of that Saturn 5 rocket. This was the first time mankind left the earth, and the resulting religious impact it had on The Apollo 8 crew - Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders looking back and seeing the earth growing smaller and smaller as they sped away toward the moon. The resulting unplanned photo of earth rise gave us all the impact of how precious our little planet is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Memories March 7, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This video doesn't have a lot of flash but excels when it comes to attention to detail and the 1968 space program. Highly reccomended and one of the reasons I remember Christmas 1968. Very pleased.
