Book Description

The Library provides in three books a grand summary of traditional Greek mythology and heroic legends. Written in clear and unaffected style, the compendium faithfully follows the Greek literary sources. It is thus an important record of Greek accounts of the origin and early history of the world and their race. This work has been attributed to Apollodorus of Athens (born c. 180 BCE), a student of Aristarchus. But the text as we have it was written by an author probably living in the first or second century of our era.

In his highly valued notes to the Loeb Classical Library edition (which is in two volumes) J. G. Frazer cites the principal passages of other ancient writers where each particular story is told and compares the various versions to those in the Library.

This review is from: Apollodorus: The Library, Volume I: Books 1-3.9 (Loeb Classical Library no. 121) (Hardcover)
A good solid, word for word translation of Apollodorus's collection of classical myths. Frazer's references to other similar tales is a great resource for folklorists and classics, both advanced and beginning scholars. The dry, simple text reflects the economy of the original well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth footnote., January 9, 2012

This review is from: Apollodorus: The Library, Volume I: Books 1-3.9 (Loeb Classical Library no. 121) (Hardcover)
This is a review of Appolodorus "The Library", Loeb edition #121.

I was truly impressed by the level of details and the amount of footnotes provided by Frazer. Frazer has done incredible job in cross reference important point of the text. He meticulously documented other texts (from Homer to Roman writers to 18th century writers; he even refenced other cultures) in which the same or related stories appeared. I would use this book as a starting point to study the Greek mythology. From here, based on his footnotes, you can easily branch out to other text to go deeper into the subject. Invaluable!

My wife used this book to do the family tree of the Greek gods. It worked great. A lot of useful information.
