Editorial Reviews

Review

Apollo's Creed is a touching book - meant to help people through the journey of their pet's illness (in this case, dog cancer) by offering up information on health choices not widely talked about - except by those who already know they exist. --EJ Thornton - best selling author

Apollo's Creed is a book that helps the pet owner through the process, medically and emotionally of canine cancer.

Canine cancer is a harsh reality. It helps to know you're not alone. It helps to know that there are ways that you can help your animal while they are healing or while they are dying. --John Craig, best selling author

About the Author

Deb Estes wrote this book to chronicle Apollo's journey through osteocarcoma (bone cancer in dogs) and address the issue of decisions and support for all those who may face similar challenges in losing your special pet due to dog cancer.

She hopes that pet owners will grant themselves the opportunities to make educated health-care decisions based on their knowledge of their pet and when faced with the loss of their pet allow themselves to grieve.

Finally, she wants owners to remember the gift their pet gave them with a smile, knowing they did everything to give their pet or in many cases, their best friend the very best in a lifetime of love and care.

Deb Estes has over 20 years experience in the industry of medical laboratory technology. She is a Registered Medical Laboratory Technician with hands on experience working in the most renowned medical laboratories in the U.S. She was recognized nationally from the largest medical diagnostic laboratory in the U.S. She studied microbiology at the University of Notre Dame as an undergraduate, and received a Bachelor's of Science and Master of Science from Regis University in Denver.

Deb is also the found of Apollo's Wing - a non-profit organization that helps people who have just been told that their dog is facing canine cancer.

More About the Author

When Apollo and I were going through this ordeal, I couldn't find any resource - book or otherwise - to help me make these hard decisions. So, I created the book that I wished I could have found then. As Apollo and I took this journey together, I searched for answers and the only place I could find them was in my heart.

This book is for you - first, to know you're not alone facing this - and second to be a source of pertinent information and true comfort during this difficult time.
Apollo lasted eleven months longer than anyone expected, so each and every day, I questioned my intentions. "Was I honoring him as a living being by trying to extend his life (and quality of life) by trying all of these traditional, alternative and cutting edge options? Did he really want this? Would I have wanted someone to do this for me?"

Some people say I pushed the envelope too far, but I knew my dog, so I was at peace.
This book is intended to give you permission to listen - not only to your vet - but to your heart and to your dog, when you have to make these difficult decisions.
I used my medical background as a bridge and I took good notes throughout the ordeal, so that I could tell the story that would not only honor Apollo, but your pet as well.
I hope this book serves as a resource to assist you on your path. I wish you peace and above all - no regrets!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed, March 5, 2008
This review is from: Apollo's Creed - his journey through canine cancer and beyond... (Perfect Paperback)
As I have often found in my life, enlightenment and crucial messages can come in the greatest time of need. This is the case of Apollo's Creed. This book came to me at an important time in my relationship with my acutely ill dog Mojo. Although he ultimately sucumbed to his illness, I was fortunate in that I could provide the best medical care that money could buy, both mainstream and alternative. This author's experience, and choices, validated my own. I found her message to be very comforting and I related to the lessons that she learned.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever loved a pet.

5.0 out of 5 stars How many people do you know who have ever had a sick pet?, March 2, 2008
This review is from: Apollo's Creed - his journey through canine cancer and beyond... (Perfect Paperback)
Now ask yourself, how many of them did much more than take them to the vet? Probably not many, because frankly, what do you do in addition to taking them to the vet? I didn't know until after I read this book.

There is a world of treatments, both mainstream and what I'd call home-health care that apply to dogs and cats that make them feel better and give them better quality of life when they're sick.

This author takes you on her journey - her quest - to give her dog the best quality of life possible, even while struggling with a dread disease.

It is enlightening. Thanks Deb Estes for sharing your story. It is bound to help millions!!!
