Father Varela is well known in Cuba, but in the United States, where he spent most of his adult life and served the downtrodden humbly and diligently, his name is hardly known.
"The reason I wrote this book in English rather than Spanish is to reach all those Americans who, if they knew what he had done, would love him," says biographer Juan M. Navia. Father Varela, exiled from Spain and Cuba as a young priest, arrived in New York City in 1823. There he befriended the city's many immigrants, especially the Irish, speaking, writing, and publishing on their behalf and establishing the Church of the Transfiguration for their spiritual nuturance.
Father Varela surrendered his life completely to the service of others, and serves as a role model for people of all ages. This is the only book in print in the English language to tell his story.
In the U.S., Navia earned a Ph.D.degree in 1965 and became an associate professor at M.I.T. Later he accepted a faculty position at the University of Alabama. It was after his retirement that Navia enrolled at Springhill College, Mobile, AL, to earn a masters degree in theology. While searching for a subject for his thesis, Navia began studying the life of Father Varela.
