This book takes us back to the unique conditions in pre-industrial and industrial age America that gave rise to this iconic figure. Real people like Benjamin Franklin are discussed along with the fictional heroes of Horatio Alger, plus many lesser known figures. Essential reading for understanding why Americans are so frustrated in this decade, when upward social mobility has ground to a halt.
