Book Description

March 15, 2002
Long-distance hikers on the Appalachian Trail need 4,000 or more calories a day to keep on walkin'--and have to carry most of it on their backs! Before the husband and son of Lou Adsmond of Grand Rapids, Michigan, set out to hike the whole trail, then 2,169 miles, she was determined that they would eat well. From that experience, she has laid out how to plan "food drops" by mail and prepared recipes for home preparation of variable meals (not EveryNightNoodles), adding tear-out tabs with cooking instructions to be dropped into the ingredients' baggies. Illustrated.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm jealous of these people., February 21, 2009

This book is very inspiring for those who want to prepare (that means cook) some food ahead of time and set it up for the mail drop method of eating on the AT. It also is based on the experience of a father/son duo hiking northbound, while ma's back home working with the oven.

While I don't plan on cooking six months worth of food for myself before I head out, it IS inspiring and gives some good ideas. My mail drop team probably won't want to be bothered with baking me bread, though.

Other than just recipes, it also has lots of other valuable information, like how to address a package to a thruhiker, when sending it to a post office, suggestions on nutrition balance and variety, and it also takes into account a wide variety of people's opinions and experiments with thruhiking foods.

My bottom line:
Mostly I just find myself jealous of the support team these guys had, but I learned some valuable information I wouldn't have without this book.

Bought this with hopes of cooking lavish meals on the trail. Too much work. Ate Beagles and peanut butter and noodles. Lots of noodles. You can learn how to dehydrate foods though.
