Book Description

Official Appalachian Trail Guides August 5, 2010
The official guide--a set of a book and maps--to the 145 miles of the Appalachian Trail between the Vermont and New York lines, paralleling the western borders of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Features of the route include Mt. Greylock, the nearby towns of the Berkshires, and the riverwalks of western Connecticut. This guidebook, in modern "unidirectional" format, comes with a set of four detached topographical maps (two sheets, printed on both sides), scaled at 1:63,360 with 100-foot contours and including elevation profiles, shelters and other features and water sources. Those are the first, from-scratch updates of the Massachusetts-Connecticut maps in more than 25 years.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Maps are worth it., December 11, 2011

This review is from: Appalachian Trail Guide to Massachusetts-Connecticut (Official Appalachian Trail Guides) (Paperback)
I bought this for a backpacking trip with my father. We went from Bullsbridge to St. John's ledges.

I had two issues. One, the guide went from North to South, which I found to be a little unconventional. It was easy enough to follow, but after looking it over I didn't take it on the trip.

The maps were excellent for the most part. The land marks and resources were accurate, but I do question if the mileage was slightly off. I talked to a few people at the Mount Algo Shelter and they agreed that the mileage didn't feel right.

That said, we had a good trip and didn't get lost. I'm looking forward to using the maps in the Spring for trips through Mass.

This is my thrid or fouth purchase of an Appalachian Trail Guide and they all have been wonderful resources for a hike. This is the 14th annual Father-Kid AT Hike I run out of our Babylon NY neighborhood and the guides have been with us every year. One year, I used an old guide and got us lost. Had I an updated version, we wouldn't have had that story to tell. Hee hee. Things change on the AT so keep your guides up to date.
